My notebook(2 ghz pentium m, x300) currently has 1 gb of 4-4-4-11 pc4300 ddr2 in one slot and an empty slot. It supports dual channel so I was wondering what the performance increase would be by adding another 1 gb stick of ram. Also if i did add another stick, would the pc4300 be compatible with pc4200 timed at say 4-4-4-12 or something? any reccomendations are greatly appreciated, thanks.

It would be a significant increase. You could add the slower memory to the notebook but it would slow the faster stick of RAM to the slower speed so it would be worth it to get the faster RAM.
