hey all, i am looking to upgrade my system, new graphics cards, new mobo, new ram, the lot

Im pretty sussed on the board and ram, thats no problem.

The issue i have, is do i SLI 2 6600GT 256 meg cards, or do i have one 512 7800GTX

The 7800GTX is still more expensive than the dual 6600GT cards, and i was wondering, is it worth it?

System specs, just in case you guys want them

AMD 3000XP+ 1.8 Ghz processor
2 gig RAM
1x 80Gb HDD
1x 200Gb HDD
540w Hyena PSU
running Windows XP Professional edition.

Looking to play games like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Titan Quest, Quake 4, Halflife 2 ect ect, the newer games

Any help is appreciated
Zac

Just buy 1 7900GT, Its pretty much the same speeds and Mhzs as a 7800GTX, but cheaper. 7900GT at newegg, are anywhere from 260-300 bucks. I recommend xfx, evga, or MSI as your choices.

Yep, I've got the 7800GTX and I say go with the 7900GT. Of course if you really want the 7800GTX I'll sell you my two for the price of two 7900GT's.

Okay, fantastic, thanks guys.
The 7900GT is still hellishly expensive over here in NZ, so looks like i will have to wait a while before i can afford something like that...

Cheers

I just noticed that you're using an Athlon XP. I hate to say it, but there are no socket A boards that support PCIe, let alone SLI. If you actually have an Athlon 64 and a board with PCIe (you never said what motherbaord you're using), then a single 7900GT will KILL dual 6600GTs. Hell; a single 7600GT will probably be better than dual 6600GTs.

I have a 7600GT and two 6600GT's and I use my 6600's. They bench SLIGHTLY better than the 7600 (hardly any better, 2-8% depending on the game, save HL2 which the 7600 does better) But I like the looks of my two small 6600GT OC's in my case :p and since I paid $100 for both of them (BFG 6600 GT OC) on one of those ultra low eBay bids that I ended up winning :) I figure why not put them to use and pick up another 7600 for when I need an upgrade. But to the OP, go for a 7900GT like everyone says, better bang for your buck and better upgrade path :)

You need to get a new CPU before you do anything else. As I said before, there are no socket A boards that support PCIe. What is your current graphics card?

if you want i'll sell you my mobo and cpu (specs below)

serriously

pm me if your interested

but yeah i would ALWAYS go for 1 card over 2. in some games, such as AoE III (my favorite) 2 cards in SLI dont offer ANY advantage

Um.. I'm in NZ too and the 7900GT is quite reasonably priced now. You can pick one up for around $500NZ, where as the cheapest 7800GTX 512mb I've found is $680... So not too sure where you've been looking. But in short, the 7900GT will kill dual 6600's. Trust me, I have one.

im currently running a Gigabyte 6600GT 256 meg card.

$500 is more than a weeks pay for me, so in my case its hellishly expensive. Ill keep saving my cash and get a 7900gt, as that seems to be the popular choice.
