I read that the release date for the codename Conroe is July 27th, and but a few things I read also stated that a buyer might be lucky to be getting one by late Q3, if not Q4. I was just curious if this was just pessimism, and if I really might have a good shot at getting one late july / early aug, of if it will be a difficult time getting them that early.

I'm on the verge of building a new machine, with ~1200 USD budget. The conroe E6300 would be a great processor, but I'd like to be gettig the stuff soon. If I am able to get the Core 2 Duo within a month or so, I was curious what the best build might be with it, with my main focus being gaming, more exclusively WoW ( i know, bad habit ). Right now I'm raiding 7 nights a week, and my computer is really starting to get sluggish during a lot of encounters, making it not very fun.

Also, cooling seems to be where i went wrong in my last machine (stock fans, + a few 120mm fans doesnt cut it), so I was curious if with this system, a good water cooling system would be the best route.

I really appreciate people taking the time to read and respond, I'd like to make a more informed decision when spending this kidn of money.

If you have any certain builds that you would recommend either with the new conroe, or without that might fit my current situation that'd be great too. I dont need mouse/keyboard/monitors, I am really looking for a core system that will be powerful to raid and run other processes(aim / foobar2000 / firefox ) at the same time.

Someone in the CPU Section posted a link that stated people should be able to purchase a Conroe by August 7th. By that time the majority of shipments to retailers should have taken place. But don't expect all Conroe models to be available on the same day.

I think it will be similar to the AM2 launch. On the first day if you wanted an AM2 CPU, then you will need to go to Alienware or some other system builder and buy an entire new PC to get the AM2 Athlon CPU. About 4 days later people were able to buy just the CPU from Newegg.com and other places, but only a couple of models. As the weeks progressed all the other AM2 Athlons came into stock.

The E6300 should be one of the first Conroes to become available for sale. The E6600 and E6700 will probably be available for sale in at most 2 weeks after August 7th. While Intel is shipping more Conroe to system builders than AMD shipped AM2 Athlons, they still have a greater manufacturing capacity than AMD. Only time will tell, but in the worst case scenario, be prepared to wait until August 27th to buy the E6300.

Regarding the cooling solution... I don't know what system you have right now, but the Conroe is a lot cooler than the old Pentium 4. Conroes have about the same thermal characteristics as the Athlon 64s, and the Conroe E6300 have been overclocked to 2.4GHz on air. But I'm not sure if that was with the stock HSF or an aftermarket HSF.

Thanks for the response.

Right now I have:
Athlon 64 3000+
eVGA 6800 GT
Asus A8V-e Deluxe
2gig's ram(can't remember speed atm)
Seagate Barracuda 250gig SATA
Seagate Baraccuda 250gig IDE

I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the processor, or with what I was doing. Anytime I tried to overclock the 3000+, anythin over 1.9 and Windows would not load. I'm running on Windows Professional. I started at multiplier of 9, and frequency of 200, and I was incrementing by 2, and just about anything over a frequency of 216 would cause it to not load. I wasn't sure if I should be increasing the voltage for such a small speed increase? I believe it was set at 2.75, with an offset of 100 mV, although I may be mistaken.

I am using all stock cooling as I said.

If the E6300's are available anytime close to the 7th of August, I would gladly wait for them, but I was curious what system would be good to build around it. I am looking to replace the tower, and everything inside.

if you have a passive cooled mobo, and a high performance vid card, air cooling your cpu might cause higher heat then your comfortable with, especially if you OCing. The vid card contributes heat to the cpu... because the air the cpu cooler uses to cool the cpu usualy passes the vid card in a standard rear exhaust case. IF (if being the key word) you are overly worried about temps, then water cooling will deffinately work for you, but i dont think its nessesary if your not using 2 7950's or something outrageous like that....
