scrrensaver in windows xp does not start

since installing xp service pack 2 screensaver in win xp
does not start any more, and the power settings do not
work either : no turn off of monitor or hard disk !
changing settings has no effect either,
any solution ?
my system:
p4 2.6 with hyperthreading ,1 GB mem, win xp professional
service pack 2 , nvidia 5800 , asus p4p800
