I spent about 3 days trying to research gps's plus software that would work
both in the car and on our boat and my brain is fried!

We own an iPaq 3670, so finally decided to buy a CF card GPS. (We already
have used iPaq with an old Magellan GPS, but to many dangling wires and
fragile connectors!)

I looked at several models that included software but decided to just buy a
bare bones CF card - Globalsat 307.

Now to auto software. We have Fugawi with Canada/USA streets capability -
but
no turn by turn - also somewhat out of date. We also have MS S&T 2004 which
has POI, but no turn by turn. Any recommendations for turn by turn Auto
software that has good coverage in Canada and USA - Easy to use interface,
POI, accuracy would be important.

For boat, we now have Fugawi v3.xx - Upgrade to enc enabled version is
costly. Any other suggestions for an improvement to what we now have that
will work on iPaq and/or laptop ?

Plenty of options, Alk's CoPilot, TomTom Navigator (newly released with
Canada mapping), Destinator, Mapopolis, Deluo Routis.

All and mor reviewed on our website.

Street Atlas for handhelds by Delorme will put routes on your street
maps but otherwise is less functional and detailed than MS Streets and
Trips. I use SA for routing and Streets & Trips for detail with a
program called GPSGate that allows more than one program to access the
GPS at once.

As far as nautical I use Pocket Navigator, however it doesn't use ENC
charts though I get my BSB charts free through work. Overall the Pocket
version of Fugawi may be cheapest because the cost of keeping up to date
commercial digital charts is generally where the greatest expense lies.

Thanks David,
I downloaded the trial of Pocket Navigator - Seems to work quite well - I
thought that they said that all NOAA charts were available free? The
program now cost just $19.95. In functionality, it seems similar to PPC
version of Fugawi, but with Fugawi, you have to find your own free charts.

MS S&T is usable, but I may try and pick up something like iGuidance,
Tom-Tom, Copilot, Destinator, Routis, Mapopolis etc - If anyone has Canadian
and USA experience with any of these, I would be interested.

Just ordered a dual CF sleeve with battery for our iPaq 3670
fromyourmobiledesk.com - seems like a good buy at US$79.99. This will be
used with our new Globalsat CF GPS - bought for $47.00 on eBay!

The only free NOAA Charts are ENC charts. That is the benefit of
programs that use them like Fugawi. I doubt Pocket Navigator will ever
support them because they are also in the business of selling elec.
charts. I personally haven't switched to Fugawi because I like the
interface and functionality of what I currently use and also get my
elec. charts paid by my employer. Not to mention encs are mostly just
US coast and I ship worldwide. BSB regions generally run around $250
each so encs are well worth the free price tag. In any case here is the
NOAA link for them:

The version I downloaded, was actually called Outdoor Navigator ( Not Pocket
Navigator). This costs $19.95 and this apparently provides FREE access to
thousands of NOAA charts via Maptech's servers. It is even possible to
download these charts using the free trial version. Here is a cut from the
outdoornavigator website
http://www.maptech.com/products/ou [...] /index.cfm

"Make Your Adventures Safer!

Make your work easier and your adventures safer by putting topo maps and
nautical charts on your Pocket PC or Palm handheld.

$19.95 gets you the PDA software and unlimited map downloads. If you have a
PDA and memory card, there's nothing else to buy.

Use it with or without GPS. Use it like a portable map library. Or connect a
GPS receiver, and you will have a powerful moving map display. "

I have spent a little time with the Trial Version and it seems to work well.
I already have Fugawi V3 with PPC version so need to do a comparison. But,
for $19.95 with free and convenient chart downloads, it is hard to see any
reason not to use this software for the PPC.

Let me know if I am missing something!

Check my page for a complete list of applications for GPS navigation
use. There are reviews of some of them.

Dale,

I looked at your site amongst several others while frying my brain :) - All
sites need to weed out the out of date stuff or have a separate section for
the latest programs & equipment.

Problem is, is that this stuff keeps changing and many of the older reviews
are not to relevant.

Based on price, Canadian coverage and features, I chose iGuidance v2. It is
an update of Routis, previously sold by Deluo who seem to have a problem
with the software owners, so have now resorted to packaging S&T with their
GPS,s. I am sure that iGuidance will not be perfect, but then some of the
others at 3X the price might not be either.

It is really tough to make an educated evaluation for ones specific needs
without having all of the top programs to road test.

I want to try turn by turn navigation, but in the end, MS S&T might be the
sensible buy because it is cheap enough to pick up a new copy each year and
thus keep the highway/street data current. It at least has reasonably good
POI . It is up to date maps that are really important - how the software
uses the data is really secondary.

Thanks for maintaining your site.
