Newbie question - decent printer with SD card input.

I agree that going via the computer is the best way, but I my real need
is to be able to do things both ways. Without offending any of my
relatives, not all of them are as adept with the PC as they could be -
they can use and like the automatic photo machines in Boots (I'm in the
UK, btw, for non-UK residents, the machines in high street shops where
you can just slot in your SD card, press a button or two, and out comes
your photos), and would like to be able to do something similar at
home...

All of the promotion to print that way benefits the printer ink and
paper companies and is not a good idea. The best way is to attach a
card reader to your computer's USB port and transfer the photos to your
computer. You can then sort out the better ones you want to print, edit
them in software like Photoshop Elements 3, and then print the adjusted
versions. You then can transfer them to an archival DVD ( you may have
to recopy the DVD every 5 years ). Using this methods you will be able
to produce better results than the conventional lab.

An Epson R300 will print directly from an SD card but does not have a
preview LCD screen. It retails for $149 USD. The R320 is the same printer
but comes with a little LCD screen so you can see what your printing. It
costs $30 bucks more for $179.
