Recently, my DVD writer can no longer recognize when a blank CD is inserted. However, it can still burn DVDs. Anyone know what's going on? I don't know the brand. I tried updating the drivers but apparantly I have the most recent one.

this is totaly unheard at all.
thereis no way why your drive does not regornize the blank cd?
what program do u use to burn cd or dvd.
try out recordnow max
 there is no problev with thte driver i think

just a thought but are the disc's new and if so does your writer recognise + & - formats.
If it does not what type of disc should it be to record on. As a + format writer will not write on a - format disc and visa versa.  unless your writer is capable of both.
