broken flash drive

I just bought a new USB flash drive, and it has stopped working. Unfortunately, it has been more than 30 days, so I can't return it. Windows says that the drive is "Unreadable", which means it has been corrupted somehow. I'm wondering if there is a program out there to fix the drive. I don't care about recovering the data on it, I just want to be able to use it again.

This should be a simple fix. Connect the drive to your computer, then right click it, and format it.

Assuming Windows will let you do that.....

That's the problem, it won't let me format, or do any kind of disk utility on it. It does not think there is a disk in the drive, even though there has to be since its connected to my USB port.

Have you tried using Disk Management? It often lets you access drives that Windows can't see and/or won't let you access. Using that utility should at least allow you to format it.

Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management

Sorry if this is telling you to do something that you already know doesn't work. Personally, this sounds like a corrupt file system to me. If you can just manage to format the drive, you should be fine.

Tried Disk Management, it wouldn't do anything. Even tried booting into the recovery console and using "fixmbr" on it, still nothing. I realize that all I need to do is format the disk, but Windows is very persistent in not letting me do that, so I need something that will let me.

I can tell you right off the bat that it's broken, they sh*t themselves at times those flash devices. Btw, those 30 days are only for Regretting your buy, you should have 12 months warranty, to get a new device.

Just RMA it and receive a new device within a few weeks.

Well, since nothing picks it up, I say RMA the drive. Even after the 30 day period the original manufacturer should still be willing to replace your drive. See if you can find their website online, and send a friendly little email to customer service.

Now don't take the friendly part as sarcasm, it actually does help.

Quick update, these guys are now www.FlashDrivePros.com, currently "www.FlashBackRecovery.com". They do more than just usb flash drive data recovery, they also sell insured flash drives.

So if you have a broken flash drive, you can go to these guys. Student pricing is gone though, but compared to others who charge from $500 up to $1000, their standard price of $99 is a steal.

Check out their facebook page as well, cool testimonials:

Not advertising at all. They did a lot to rescue my files. My flash drive took a lot more work then expected. The last company messed it up pretty bad. But flash drive pros didn't try to charge me more. This was the thread I found them on in the first place and I wanted to let other people know they can trust flashdrivepros.com They are a very good and honest company!!!! Just read the facebook page!!
