Just ahead of the Core 2 Duo launch in the US, we posted an interview with David Perlmutter, Intel's top mobility executive. Perlmutter talks about Core, the upcoming Nehalem micro architecture, power consumption trends and, of course, we couldn't resist to talk a bit about AMD as well.

What's your take on his answers?

A good read.

I still wonder what plans, if any, Intel has to enter the mainstream desktop graphics space.

Now that ATi is out of their pocket, I wonder if their in-house graphics will grow beyond just chipset integration.

It seems Intel's most likely target for the next release is HyperTransport. Will they be trying to set up a GPU/PPU co-processor? What about multiple sockets for high-end desktops? How would this play against their Woodcrest/Workstation segment?

Not appropriate questions for this interview, but questions I have nontheless. The greater AMD picture is slowly becoming clear, and I'd like to see how Intel plans to subvert them.

Intel has supposedly placing more power graphics chips on their latest boards. Instead of trying to create mainstream graphics on their own, they best just buy nVidia. All eyes are now on Intel.

Also, though seemingly obvious, I found it interesting that Perlmutter pointed out that integer and fp calculations could be greatly improved with the current architecture, especially with what we've seen thus far.

A similar statement was made about the P4 and SSE, and that statement came to fruition with Conroe.

I'm interested to see how fast they can push those numbers.

Do we believe that you will need a full graphics card? I don't think so, but I believe people will want very good graphics machines going forward. I think that's going to be an even greater focus for us in the future.

YES we do need a full graphics card! This improves both graphics quality and consumer choice and increases competition. See post on AMD buying ATI for more on this soon.

I'm glad he is being a good winner; he represented Intel very well with his answers. As well no knocking of AMD was present showing a mature management presence.

Overall I thought it was he was professional well minded interview.

Funny -- I was about to begin quoting Perlmutter and Richards when commenting on the competition then ask which one sounds professional and which one sounds arrogantly smug.
