Hi all,

I'm currently trying to get my iPaq to connect to my linux box at home over
GPRS, i can make the GPRS connection without problems, and the VPN
connection also seems to work (i can VPN into the linux box) however, i keep
loosing the connection.

I have already added the ip-address of the linux box in the 'execeptions' in
Connection Manager, but alas, no luck sofar.

What kinds of vpn connections does windows mobile 2003 support btw? I
noticed i can't specify between IPSEC & PPTP, nor can i set anything
relating to encryption & auth...

Hope you guys can help me out :)

windows mobile 2003 supports PPTP and L2TP vpn connections. L2TP is not
straight true IPSec so you won't be able to connect directly to an IPSec
endpoint unless you have an IPSec client. Movian had one at one time and I
believe they have licenesed it out to another company so you may still be
able to purchase it. The sad truth is that IPSec clients for windows mobile
2003 are few and most only work with certain vpn endpoints.

I see, well, pptp should still work, my win2k stations can connect to the
linuxbox, and the ipaq also connects, it just disconnects as soon as i have
tcp/ip trafic. Adding the IP's to the "exceptions" didn't aid, and i noticed
that my pptp server gives some strange errors, i'll paste them inhere just
incase you know what they mean.

I think my problem is that the pocketpc isn't connecting properly to the
linuxbox (might be CHAP related, might be encryption related, i don't know
where to start looking)

You should think about this part. Chech that you are using MS-CHAP-v2 and
MPPE 128 on the server.

You running Poptop (or something else)? I don't think swan supports this.

It could very well e chap related. I'm in the process of trying poptop on
this end, I'm not sure if you're using the same on that end but if so this
could be good for everyone once we figure out a fix.

So i need MS-CHAPv2 & MPPE 128.... ok, i'll check & test those

Yea, i use both Poptop & swan, but since i don't have an ipsec client it's
pretty much useless for the pocketpc ;)

this line says a lot also. Are you set at 128 on linux box?

I tried it, didn't change a thing, it's really puzzling me, the strangest
things is that i actually get connected, with an IP and everything, but as
soon as i have any traffic it's adios :(

In article <tJmdnTa9sq75sF3cRVnyiA@scarlet.biz>, co@spamfem.be says...

Have you found WHY you do lose connection? I mean, is that a protocol
error or the ipaq that deliberately disconnects?

I have used sometimes a vpn connection from my ipaq with gprs to my home
linux server (connected with an ADSL line) and it always worked. Still,
I have not tried long (more than 5 minutes) connections.

You should look at the logs on the linux box (maybe turn on the debug
options in both pptpd and pppd) to see if the reason for disconnection
is that the ipaq deliberately dropped the connection. Maybe it's just
that idiot (imho) connection manager that decides it needs the vpn no
more and closes it.
