My grandparents and brother were recently displaced by those tornados in FL last week. I flew down to DeLand, FL to help them get their homes squared away. Everyone is 10-4, but lots of damage to the homes. Here's some pics I took today:

(i have some even better ones on my cell phone that i'll post later)

Is that a normal weather pattern down there? Tornado's in January?

Reply to BigMac

There is no normal weather pattern on fl. Except hot in the summer.

aye

ironically, tornadoes are most common in the winter here. the last time FL had such deadly tornadoes was in February 1998. I remember those well because one my mom's horses was impailed by a 2x4.

it's usually waaaay too hot in the summer for tornadoes to form in FL. but not in the winter...

I'm glad that everyone in your Family is alright!!!!!!

Things can always be replaced, Family can't!!!!!

Exclamation marks can't be replaced. You'll have used them all up.

No, two of those are his legs [/harsh]

Reply to WingDing

Oops. I just used them to seal my lunch [/thought they were twist ties]

Reply to llama_man

That's okay, a very practical use of his gammy legs.

Reply to WingDing

Other uses:
pipe cleaners
cable ties
tieing up parcels
toy for kittens

Good to hear everyone is ok...

Now my insurance rates are going to go up so I can give my money to rebuild structures that will be knocked down again within 10 years.. just because people want to live in tornado zones. :)

Reply to Riser

On top of that, your taxes will go up to rebuild structures that will be bombed again with 10 years... just because people want to live in the Middle East

Reply to llama_man

My taxes will go up because far left leaning Democrats are focking toolbag jackarses who don't want to have to work for jack sh*t.

Reply to Riser

But the bombs are more fun for all of us to watch on TV though.

Reply to Riser

Not if they're the type that create an EMP effect.

Reply to WingDing

Aah, the "WW Special"

Reply to llama_man

He eats a week's supply of egg and onion sandwiches in preparation.

Reply to WingDing

hmm, places like that are like the bay of bengal. even though they get hit by disaster after disaster they continue to live there. bloody odd people.

i suppose i should say i'm glad they are alright but i wouldn't be sincere. not saying i wish you or your family harm just that it doesn't affect me either way.

i know this wasn't a sympathy post but others seem to show concern and i honestly don't know why.

Thats true except during hurricanes. Most of the inland damage from Ivan was due to the tornadoes it spawned. It was acutally kind of neat to see. Driving home after we were allowed back in, you could see into this patch of pine trees (the florida state flower) where a tornado had touched down, about 1 mile from my house. The trees were folded over in a giant spiral pattern. Just a little reminder from Mother Nature of who's really in charge

Reply to turpit

Oddly enough, Florida gets hit by more hurricanes than St. Lucia does, and we're in the middle of the Caribbean Sea and at the apex of the Windward Islands.

Ninja,

Where Ive lived in FL the past several years is like Ripleys Believe it or not central. A few things have have changed over the past decade, but in its heyday, the gulf coast was the lightning strike capitol of the US, the UFO sighting captil of the world (which is not suprising considering the next stats) home to the little town of Milton FL, the buckle of the bible belt (more churches per captia than any place else in the US) and had the documented busiest airspace-------on the planet. The gulf coast is an on and off contender for most rainfall as well. Sooner or later ole Mother Nature is going to smite this place but good and put it all under water once and for all.

What shocks us in the islands about you guys is that after the storms have leveled your homes, you move right back in! I mean, what the hell? Down home, the only people that "live" on the coast are the foolish tourists. Everyone else builds inland on the mountains. I mean, do you think if you keep building, eventually nature will give you a free pass?

Dude your telling me?

They are rebuiling New Orleans. ETF is that about? To quote one of its residents...."Its a bowl" In Panama City, in the intercoastal on the FAC to rwy 14 at the regional airport, there is still a 100 ft yacht beached. The only way it will every get floated out is during another hurricane induced storm surge. In PCola, there are still 50 ft fishing boats gounded------in the trees. Even 100 miles inland, little towns in alabama are still recovering from Ivan. Its amazing.

I like watching the vids of people in Tornado alley, after a tornado hits. They're always like "We'll rebuild, because the good Lord wants us to, and we know that because we survived...", and I always think, no, a fucking F5 rolling thru your town is usually considered a sign to get your ass outta there. The ancients knew that. Why the fuck can't you?

Reply to dasickninja

Thing like that make me advocate for the removal of warning labels. Let nature take its course. We'll be a better race eventually.

That's the problem with where I live, there's no mountains. That brought about our expertise on water management and dike building, which Dutch companies are putting into practice in New Orleans at the moment.

Reply to BigMac

Not only will we be a better race, the population issue will also be less of an issue.

Reply to mugz

Hope they know how to build efficient flood gates so we can flood that damn city again.

Move the focking city a couple miles to the west on higher ground.

And no, its not all chicken. The other one is seasoned chicken that tastes better to me.

If I can remember correctly, the Netherlands at least has the advantage of being level to slightly above the water line. New Orleans is completely below sea level.

Reply to dasickninja

Which is equally true of the poverty line in the case of New Orleans [/profound]

actually thats is very loosely what darwin said...

darwin said, the ones who survive are the ones who adapt best.

:P

Reply to mrface

Aye. Darwin has 2 major theories.

Survival of the fitess, adapt, whatever, which is probably one of the most well known theories in the world.

And then he had Evolution, which is probably the most controversial theory in the world.

Interesting.

The population issue isnt an issue in the developed countries. Those of Europe, Auatrailia, North America. The 3rd world countries, China, India, (yes, china and India are 3rd world) many of those in SA are a different story and they dont have govenments regulating stupidity like the rest of us do.

Almost every place on the planet is susceptible to some sort of catastrophic natural disaster. The only difference in geographical areas is frequency. Tornadoes are extremely unpredictable and exist in a very wide area of the U.S. Avoiding tornadoes is impossible in the Midwest, lower midwest, and southeast portions of the US. That said, there are areas that are more susceptible to tornadoes than others. (like Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Kansas, etc)

But yes, rebuilding in areas like coastlines and New Orleans is just plain stupid.

I'm not sure what my point is...

And the murder rate in New Orleans has also exceeded the death rate in Iraq...but you're not likely to see that little statistic floating around as it would make the "saint" Ray Nagan and the rest of the dems look like boobs

You couldn't pay me all the money in the world to live in that shi*t hole. That city was so far gone even before Katrina. N.O. is a modern day early 90's L.A. Sad part is it'll probably never change because N.O. isn't a wealthy city. (At least L.A. has money) Regardless the entire place should be turned into a federal prison... kinda like Escape from N.Y./L.A.

And they continue their stupidity by re-electing Ray Nagan. The man is an idiot.

Reply to mpjesse

LOL, yeah

It amazed me that Nagan wouldnt bus people out to save them from the hurricane, but damned if he didnt bus them back in just for the election.

Check this out on Google Earth:
51°39'9.80"N 3°43'25.63"E

(just copy-paste it into google earth, and make sure to zoom out a bit to get a grasp on the scale of the thing).

It is called the Delta works, and was constructed after major flooding disaster in 1953. There's also information on the web on it.

Now you know why there's Dutch companies working in New Orleans. And yes, you can open the gates and flood the area again. Actually the flood gates are only closed in sufficiently dangerous weather conditions.

You remember wrong. Half the country is below sealevel, and it is the major river delta area of Europe. Hence the Dutch expertise on water management. If Al Gore is right, we're gonna need all the expertise we have the coming decades.

Actually... i used to have a signature a long, long time ago (2000) that said "Signatures Suck." It won "signature of the month" back when we did that shite. Good times...

But yeah... what i said is probably signature worthy. LOL. <insert foot in mouth>
