Firstly, on a home network (3 machines running xp pro on a hub with dynalink adsl router) is it posible to share the bandwidth equally between the 3 machines so 1 person can't hog it all?

Second, On machine A it is posible to browse machines B and C shared files but not posible to see machine A's shared files from machine B or C (windows has a cry and says "connecting to A" and wants a user name and password etc. Why does that happen?)

Lastly, How do you set up a router so that msn file tranfers will work? (maybe this question should be in the router section?)

Any help greatly appreciated,
Mike.

A switch would maximise the bandwidth, but I'm a afraid you still share the net speed. You could perhaps set up a way of limiting how much speed each one gets, but that's not worth while really.

You can easily set up B & C to have shared folders, drives etc. You can 'map a drive', which sets up a drive on one PC to look like a folder on another. I'm using W2K, but I imagine it's similar. Be sure to have secure passwords and firewalls though. YOu don't want outside influences getting in.

Try setting the router to forward packets out of it's port.

With the file sharing, neither machine B or C can see A's shared files. The only thing different is machine A has SP1 installed. Why won't it work?

What OS's are on each machine?

Busy trying to restrict internet access speed myself, in a similar situation to yourself.

The only solution I've come up with is to find an old shitty comp capable of handling ICS, and put that between the router and the rest of the network. Configure the software to allow only 1/3 on the available bandwidth to each client, then configure the clients to connect to the ICS server.

The drawback is you'll have to leave the server on all the time, as well as the router, and software ICS has been known to affect latency - if the clients connected to it are into gaming that may be an issue.

As I said in the first post all the machines are running xp pro.

The thing that matters the most is getting file sharing working. I cant belive no one knows how to do that.

The question again:
On machine A it is posible to browse machines B and C shared files but not posible to see machine A's shared files from machine B or C (windows has a cry and says "connecting to A" and wants a user name and password etc. Why does that happen?)
(machine A has SP1 installed)

Thanks,
Mike
