I i just buildign a computer right now. I have a p4 2.4ghz, R8500(not le) and ddr memory. I play alot of games but also do school work etc. on the computer. I have a friend with the Viewsonic g790- 19in .22mm diagonal dot pitch. He says it is great for gaming. Are there any others out ther that are really good? I am upgading from a Pentium one 200, and havent been keeping up on the technology. He also said something about the RGB plug-in to some moniters. Does this increase performance and what Moniters and video cards have that capability.

Thankyou very much for your opinions.

if your looking around the $400 range then i sugest you look into the viewsonic P95f and the sony G420s. the g790 is also nice for the money but is a SM rather than AG and i don't hink it's flat either.

the hmd is in that funky modern decor cabinet I think, while the g420 is in a more traditional monitor cabinet with a swivel base. they should be the same inside althouhg sony charges a whole lot more for that wierd cabinet on the hmd's.

so do you think i should get the NEC 915+ over the G420 because it is there in store i can get it for 350, and the sony is like about that plus shipping?

If you plan on using resolutions no larger than 1280x1024, I'm sure the NEC will do fine, if what you're referring to is the FE950+ since I've never heard of a 915+. The Sony G420 can do 1600x1200@85 while the NEC does it at 75Hz and the Sony has a slightly better dot pitch but some people prefer the look of the Mitsubishi tube over the Sony. Which did you prefer between FE950+ and HMD-A440?

yeah. i do mean the 950+. i checked on that yesterday. I played metal of honor at 1600 by 1200 on a alienware on the NEC moniter and it looked amazing. next time i am there i will put the HMD on that computer and check it out.

I checked the stats on CDW.com. The NEC is the variable .25 to .27 like the viewsonic pf790. the sony is just .24. If a lot of people like the G420 for its tube, then i will buy that one. Nay moniter i get will be a severe upgrade from my 5 year old 14 inch. is there any stores online that people recomend?

a place that i always buy my hardware fom is www.mwave.com. they have pretty good prices but the main reason that i go there(may not apply to you) is because they are about 20 miles from where i live so i don't have to pay for shipping. but beware, certain products that you buy anywhere may not be returnable and you'll have to go dircetly to the amnufacturer, such as sony.

that is actually wherwe i was looking. HTey have it for i think 360. Then shipping is 45 for me (i live in oregon). I would have to deal with the manufacter, is that common with many online places or just them?

This is the gamble with online purchasing. Fine for smaller things but big things like a monitor can be a pain. Look for places that have good return policies or will act as the go between on a manufacturers warranty, or even offer a warranty themselves. Most places either won't or will make you pay return shipping even if it's defective.

Sony's is a variable .24-.25 dp, so it's not as big a difference as you may think. If you like the NEC as much or better than the Sony where you work, I'd go with the NEC.
