Hi,
I have a DSL router-modem attached to a router/switch/printerserver device to share the dsl connection and printer. Although I got the dsl-sharing to work, the printerserver won't. The problem seems to be that the printprocess can't connect to the printer.
The router/switch/printerserver is setup in 'Bridge'-mode (the router-modem does the DHCP, etc). What can be the problem with this device setup that causes the printerserver to malfunction?

Is the PC spooling to the printserver?

Have you tried connecting the printer to the PC directly?

yeah, it probably is, because I see a process spoolsv.exe in my firewall stats. Curious thing about this though is that it appears be trying to connect via a sequence of local ports (probably failing at each and thus trying the next port). Could it have something to do with the NATP in the router-modem? (maybe blocking this process or something?)

(btw, when printer is connected directly to computer there is no problem)

Port 515 for lp, lpr and lin printer using Unix, and port 631 for IPP (Internet Printing Protocol), again in Unix.

Please tell me you're using Unix?

Otherwise can you tell me the kit and OS involved?

no, no, no...! Im using XP pro. The router-modem is a SpeedTouch 510 and the router/printerserver is a Sweex PrinterServer & BroadbandRouter (LB100010)

The router-modem is a SpeedTouch 510 and the router/printerserver is a Sweex PrinterServer & BroadbandRouter.

So you have a router/modem and a print server/router? In other words, two routers?

Have you assigned an IP to the print server to match with the other IPs in the network?

yup, I only needed a switch for setting up the network, but couldn't find one with a printerserver (if thats even common/possible), so I bought the router instead (the printerserver/router is set in bridge mode, so it is essentially a switch, according to its manual)

Im not sure if I entirely understand your question about the IP address.. a printer network driver is installed locally on the pc that acts a local printer and connection to the printerserver of the Sweex router. The Sweex router has an ip address* that is assigned by the (SpeedTouch) router-modem.

(* the spoolsv.exe process shows up in the firewall stats with this as remote ip)

So I guess there's nothing wrong with ip address assignment.

Do you have the option of assigning a static IP to the print server?

I had a similar problem while trying to get my PC's set up for a print server which was set up to dynamically recieve IP's.

I think the problem is : while setting up XP to print to an IP address you specify an address not a dynamic address, so the computers always end up looking at the same place for the printer regardless of what IP it may have been assigned at the time.

The fix for me was to set the print server IP address to some static location in it's firmware. Then set each PC to print to this address. In other words, I never did figure out how to get it working like I thought it should.

the adresses are assigned dynamically by the DHCP server in de router-modem (appears to be always the same though). Ill try with static addressing, thx for the tip.

I actually got it working with all my PC's on DHCP (DHCP server in the router like you), just the print server has a static address. That turned out to be OK for my needs, but it was still ticking me off a little. Sorry I wasn't clearer about that in my last post. I kept messing with it because I really wanted the PC's on the network to be able to work as DHCP clients, but could care less if my print server address stays the same.

Have you specified the IP address to the port of your printer(XP)? which is the printer server's IP.

Today is a nice day
