I think I need a new DSL modem. I get static on my phone when the modem is on (Even if the modem isn’t connected to the PC) and my ISP assures me it’s not on their end.

1) Will any DSL modem do the job?
2) Could I have cause the modem to go bad by having it next to a big bad speaker? I have since moved the modem.

Check the filters (if applicable) and if you can get hold of the phone number to test the line.

Sounds like the filters aren't properly set, or perhaps a conenction in the system is faulty.

Yeah I have, I changed the filters and even doubled them up. I even bought a new phone and changed the jack.

The support guy came out today and tested the line. He put a bigger filter on, which he was certain would take care of the problem, but it didn’t. It only made it not as bad. They now believe the problem is back at their end after all. They said the tested the lines and even change a filter at their end. I think now their going to switch the line over or what ever they do, and they said that should take care of it. I hope so.

I don’t have the number to check the line. I don’t see why I need that, because all I have to do is pick up my phone and hear the static, so as far as I’m concern it fails.

I thought maybe the modem was bad, but he doesn’t seem to thinks so, and said having it near the speaker wouldn’t hurt it.

If the line test fails, you have your answer. If not, it's the kit at one end or the other. Sometimes the distance from exchange can be too great for a successful DSL deal. I would imagine your ISP would have tested this prior to enabling though.

Around here you have to be with in three miles of the phone company, and yeah they tell you up front if you’re in distance. I must have had DSL now for two years, but it did get disconnected a couple weeks ago and when I got it turned back on a week later I had the problem ever since. So I was thinking the problem was at their end, but they said it wasn’t, now they say it is.
