If Siemen's Openlink is set up on Windows 2000 Advanced Server with
Cluster services, is it possible for the client nodes to address the
Cluster with a service address, virtual ip or whatever Microsoft calls
it so a failover essentially becomes transparent? .......Similar to
HACMP in AIX where a service address is how clients address the
cluster rather than having to know about multiple servers.

Appreciate any comments or places to get documentation on this is
appreciated.

In short, yes. In Microsoft cluster, you setup "virtual IP" addresses and
host names so that clients do not connect directly to the server nodes.

John

as far as connecting to multiple servers? This is not why a cluster is there, the physical addresses are used only for the SYSTEM processes. The User uses only the "floating IP's". hense: Virtual IP, and the bound netbios name for the IP resource(when netbios binding is being used).

There are many, many documentations from microsoft about this, and a good book is MS cluster by MS press.

Have a nice day...

I figured it would do this. Just wanted confirmation. My IS department
says that this cannot be done and this is being developed. I needed some
confirmation that the software in fact acts like this.

Is there anywhere on MS site that confirms this explicitly? I cant find it
yet.

Thanks

Robert

You don't need to look very hard to find it. All documents relating to
clustering address the concept of virtual servers. Here's a link that
describes how to set one up on a cluster:
