AuzenTech HDA X-PLOSION 7.1 DTS Connect DDL Sound Card PCI 32BIT Optical Output

Creative Sound Blaster X-FI Xtreme Music 24BIT Sound Card

now i heard that the x-plosion works better with dts, and uses optical cables and is better for sound with the z-5500 speakers i'm getting. But i also heard that it is slightly worse when it comes to fps in games, but could make specifically in-game music better. so is this just a case of speed vs quality, or are there features that make one card stand out? What do you think is best for this rig?

I can't speak for the auzentech card, but let me say this, I use the Soundblaster Extreme Music card and I'm a hardcore audiophile. I have B&W N800 series speakers and I'd have no reservations about running the line out into my preamp for music.

For games, I use high end Sennheiser 590 headphones straight into the soundblaster's headphone jack. The X-Fi has the best headphone support EVER for gaming. When you set the X-fi control panel to "headphones" and turn on the CMSS 3d-Headphone feature, in battlefield 2, which has native support for X-Fi, if there is a sniper taking shots at me from the hill behind me, up and too my left, the 3d modeling is so good that I know almost exactly where he is. Not EXACTLY of course but it is pretty uncanny I usually get pretty close when I spin around. It changed my game. I can't promise those results because my headphones are pretty awesome. The sound in the prey demo was pretty out of this world too. Much much better than the old Audigy series cards.

For music you want to change your output to "2 speakers" and turn off the 3d modeling.

Now, there are better "audiophile" cards that are better for music but if you game I think X-fi is the way to go. X-FI is a lot of bang for the buck. Not all games will have extra X-FI functionality but you'll want one for the games that do.
