I'm having trouble with most of the third party applications I've installed
on my axim x50v. These programs ran reasonably well on my E755 with wm2003.
In particular the problem software is NpopW, Inkspot, and Keeptrack. They
all install and run fine until the program is closed either by myself or the
o/s memory management. As long as they remain open or minimized they wotk
as expected but a true closing causes a save error. Npop will lose all the
messages, Inkspot will have a critical error in the database and prompt me
to delete them (and not function until I do), and worst of all Keeptrack will
without warning delete all of the financial entries and when I sync to the
desktop it deletes them there as well. One other clue I've discovered it that
if I use the included task switcher and close any of the 3rd party applications
including Resco explorer 2003 I get a program not responding error. Is anyone
with wm2003se not experiencing this? Is it my axim or the o/s?
Other than the vga screen I'm not that impressed with the axim. I haven't
noticed a performance increase over my E755 running at 400mhz with the axim
running at 624mhz. Perhaps this is due to the extra demand of se?
Should I return the axim?
Thanks in advance for your replies,

Dean

Did you look at the websites for the programs you are having problems
with?

If there is an issue it may be listed, with possible
solutions/upgrades. Then they will have Technical Support that you can
ask. Don't you think that is the way to get the official line for them,
most publishers do support registered users apart from any FAQ's and
helpfiles they publish. If you've paid use the support you have paid
for.

I just discovered that if I use magic button to close Inkspot it doesn't crash
even if I do a soft reset. Npopw however stll crashes.

These are legally licensed software purchased by me or a trial version. Some
have been removed from my E755 (in fact the E755 sits in a hard reset coma
state which I will sell with no 3rd party software if I decide to keep the
axim). You seem to be infering otherwise. Support paths can be slow and biased.
I asked for readers opinion in this ng so I have a general census before I
contact support. Anyone have any constructive thoughts preferably with hands
on experience with the axim x50v.

I am not inferring that your software isn't registered. I am saying you
should use the support, it is part of the package. People won't use the
support if they aren't registered, it could have been a reason to
ignore the help these companies have set up.
You are assuming it may take a long time for a response from the
company- apart from being useful information for others *if* this is
the case it is a very unfair pre-judgement to apply. They may be fast,
they may have your answers. You are not using the most likely place to
have the information- who else has more information about these
programs than the publishers/writers themselves?
Even *if* the response is slow the sooner you ask (or look) for your
answers the sooner you will get them.

If you really want to find answers to your questions don't ignore the
experts- the people who write/publish the programs. You could end up
moaning about these people when you haven't really any justification.
If you have a problem you don't need a consensus before you ask for
help. It doesn't matter if it is only you that has an issue, you have
an issue. Ask for help if you've paid for it.

The Dell Axim I have is the Dell Axim X5 (400/64). It works fine,
I have no problems with it. Two things to
try: maybe you need to completely remove everything related tot he
old device. Then reinstall the Dell fresh. Maybe the software
is comfusing the two devices. (The Dell requires a driver so
maybe the device is accessing the wrong driver?)

The other thing to try is are you sure you've got enough memory?
Maybe the problem is mitigated if you free up additional space
on the device.

Another thing to try: do a hard reset (after backing up files)
and start with a clean new install. Add in each program and
then try the device. You may be able to narrow it down to
one program that is not working right.

And I've found when looking for experts it's better to ask
here than the people who created the program. Often the people
here in this usenet newsgroup know more about the program/the device
than the people who made the program. But then that might be why
Microsoft made them into MVPs.

Amy, Thank You for your reply.

> The Dell Axim I have is the Dell Axim X5 (400/64).

I believe this is a ppc2002 is it not? I had no problems with these
applications on my previous devices. I'm trying do determine whether it's
the new o/s (wm2003se) or the manufacturer's design (Dell axim x50v) is to
blame.

It works fine,

Hmm, not sure I follow you. This is a brand new axim with clean installs using
the cab files of the software and using a program called cabinstl.exe to
install them. I've used this method quite successfully on my E740 (ppc2002),
and my E755 (wm2003 fe). I've made some progress on this. See inline responses
that follow.

A good point, but I've checked and have plenty of free storage and program
memory. Furthermore, what I'm attempting to do is replicate a setup that has
worked on my previous machines.
The differences in the devices are the manufacturer and the o/s is now second
edition.
> Another thing to try: do a hard reset

Did that too.

(after backing up files)

Well I seem to have them all working now except npopw. For some odd reason
Inkspot started working after I installed an application called magic button,
which I've uninstalled because I've since been able to get Spb PocketPlus
to work. (Thanks to Sven's reply to another thread stating he had it working
on his x50v, I re-installed it).
KeepTrack I've got working by updating to the latest version. Npopw continues
to crash. It's a self contained exe without an install and still refuses to
save the mail files when closed. i sure miss this app. I'm thinking of starting
a new thread to see if anyone has this working on a wm2003se device,
particularly, a dell x50v. Is that ok Alan? or are you going to scold me again?

Did I moan? Did I say I wasn't simultaneously seeking other avenues?
In fact this device was new to me on Friday. The problems were discovered
on Saturday. Most support is M-F 9-5. On Monday I received a reply from
Iliumsoft (Keeptrack) that led me to discover a newer version had been released
which seems to have corrected the issue I was having with that app.

Perhaps, but a little research doesn't hurt.

Agreed
Ask for help if you've paid for it.

I have an X50v also. I see the same problems that you do. Things
crash and the memory won't release when you close apps.

Hopefully, I can find out how to use this thing. My X30 worked way
better.

Donna,
Thanks for the reply. Was your X30 wm2003SE? I'm still unsure which is to
blame.

Thanks again,

yeah, it was the same OS. The X50v has more programs crash. When I
try to close a program it usually crashes (program is not responding).

Exactly what I needed to know. Thank You! I will now hound Dell's customer
sevice and maybe help expedite a rom patch.

FWIW... oddly, most of my program closing problems went away when I installed
trancreative's magic button software to close my programs. But, the real weird
part is I've uninstalled magic button and it's registry entries but most
programs continue to close properly. You might want to try that. The only
2 that don't are npopw and pocket workout.
