Heyas,

I'm slowly being consumed by all this talk of Core Duo 2 hehe. Here is my current system:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (OC'd @ 2.7ghz)
2 gigs Corsair XMS Ram
DFI LanParty SLI-nf4 Mobo
2 x eVGA 7800GTXs
Hyudai L90D+ 19" LCD
Lian Li V1000 Plus Case
Custome Water Cooling.

I'm thinking of upgrading once the rush has passed, but am curious how much life my 7800GTXs have left? Will I need to upgrade them with a new Vista/Core Duo 2 system or can I keep them for longer?

I apreciate the advice!

Thanks,
Jie

That setup should last you for awhile. Have you had any problems with the hardware not being able to keep up with whatever you're doing?

My "only" major problem has occured when playing Oblivion. I've gotten a few BSODs, but none were Hardware related. I'm kinda leaning towards my next system as being very cutting edge and able to handle games like Crysis/BF 2142 with ease.

Dont get me woring...I love my current system, but I'm just worried how long until it's age really shows. I also want to make sure that when i do upgrade...I see a decent increase in performance.

I'm also debating if I should build my next system. Kind of getting tired of building/maintnance lol. I may go lazy and by a prebuilt gaming rig next round :P. Time is a big factor.

If you really want to upgrade, I wouldn't upgrade for at least a year. That'll be when Vista hopefully has it's bugs worked out, DX10 is up and running, and DX10 compatible cards will hopefully be out.

So do you think the 7800GTXs will be able to handle most games games for another year? I'd like to keep running all new games at 1280x1024 (highest settings possible) for as long as I can hehe.

I've thought about upgrading the CPU only for now 4400 or a 4800 when the prices drop even lower, but thats anothe topic.

Yeah you should be fine.

You'll be fine until you need a DX10 card.

Yes those cards should be fine, for most games they have alot of grunt.

The only game that really illustrates problems in the 7800GTX architecture is Oblivion - this performs better on ATI hardware in general. However, again - SLI muscle still performs well here.

To be honest, I agree that you would do fine with those til DX10. The only reason I could envisage you wanting to change before then is if you wanted a faster single-card solution (eg 7950GX2) to reduce the power consumption/noise/heat...

...but if you were that bothered you wouldn't have a 2x7800GTX rig! :)

Thanks for the replies. Its nice to get a few opinions every once in a while. I tend to get a bit compulsive when I see new technology and feel that I need it now lol! Most of the time what I have already is more than fine to suite my needs.

I love my 7800GTXs and ever since I went water cooling, my system runs near silent. Much better than having a ginormous Sunon blower fan next to the vid cards hehe.

Yeah, those should last you until absolutely must have a DX10 card (or cards). Maybe we can assume that's at least a year to 18 months away?

Due professional use ( I ran 6800 ultra as Quadro cards) I cannot upgrade my VGA as fast as I wish, but even playing oblivion with my SLi 6800 ultra, I got good playing performance (not in max set up) . I tested a 7900 GTX set up and it runs better , but they suck in my professional requirements... so 6800 Ultra should be outdate by now...but reallity says no... I can play all the games for a while...so your SLi 7800 GTX would be fine a for a long time (until DX 10 or even 11 arrives) of course if you are energy concerned... 7900 GTX consume much less than 7800 GTX... but that's another issue...

tbh that system u have now is still fast, i would keep ur setup till vista arivives, then u can take ur pick at the hardware availble then. Dunno if quad core conroes will be out then so i would just wait and see.
