Trying to build a second system on the cheap. I have some parts i can reuse (not sure I want to) and a budget of $450 at the absolute max would love to keep it under $400. Looking to just get it going and upgrade later

What I have

40gb ATA hardrive
512 mb pc2100 ddr
19" crt

What i am thinking

Generic case and good power $70

Pentium d 805 $95

Mobo with ati graphics built in $60
and ddr 2 mem pref 4 slots
pci express slot sli not needed

ddr2 533 2 x 512 $85

Sata 3g/s 160 gig hd $65

with $25 left for shipping cables etc hits $400

Then just pop in a pci express card after I have money and dx10 cards come out. and good to go.

I am looking for specific parts I should use on the cheap for this setup, or suggestions if I should be considering different rig completly.

Thanks guys

Looks to be a good solution. Theres not much to change to make it cheaper. I doubt you would need 1gb of memory right now though, as long as your onboard video doesnt use up more than 64mb of memory. With a dual core CPU, you won't be noticably slowing down because of the lack of RAM. 1 stick of 512mb DDR2 533 will only cost $40. Add another stick along with your video card upgrade later.

Not bad for do not get an 805. The 805 is absolutely horrible as a processor. Your motherboard will come with all the cables you need. Try to upgrade to at least a D820 or go single core.

if thats the case i would rather get an amd system. but i recommend you save up a bit more, and you can get yourself a decent conroe system for around 700, with a good G965 mobo as soon as theyre out, and by that time you will have enough money too, im hoping, but if thats not the case id go for a socket am2

Even overclocked.. 805 sucks, its pointless to get one and spend what you have to in cooling and power to o/c it.

Lol! I can see why people hate the D805 but I love owning one. I agree, I did have to spend $18.99 to get a AC Freezer 7 Pro but that didn't really break the bank :p

Regarding the "increased power cost" that everyone talks about. If you use your computer as much as most people do, leaving it on 4-6 maybe 8 hours a day isn't a big deal. If you are one to leave your PC on for days on end, maybe we should talk about the power consumed by your microwave and freezer to provide you a never ending supply of Hot Pockets and ice cold Mt. Dew

Looks like a nice, cheap build to me.

So most people would say no to the 805, could bump cpu a bit. Really like the idea of dual core though. This machine will be used for a little bit of everything so I like the performance in multitasking that dual core brings. So that being said if 805 is out, would I go 3800 x2 or 820. Core 2 6300 would be another option, but both that and the x2 are starting to get out of budget.
