Hey everyone

I know these topics have really been done to the death of late, but I just ordered my new system (see below) and I'm wondering what your thoughts are on performance in Oblivion + new games in the next year or so (Crysis, UT2K7, ect.):

Antec Sonata II (w/450W PSU)
ASUS M2N-E nForce 570
AM2 X2 4600+
2GB Corsair XMS2-5400
Seagate 250GB SATA2 16MB
ASUS X1900XT
Viewsonic 2025wm

Is Oblivion possible maxed out w/HDR @ 1600x1050 with this setup? What about upcoming games (maybe not maxed out, but retaining 1600x1050)? I haven't heard much about games at this widescreen resolution. Anything I should look to upgrade ~Christmas? Thanks for the input...

NO.
Nice setup but not enough horse power for those settings.
I have no idea the capabilities of unreleased games.
Maybe crossfire or DX10 card when available.

It is possible; just don't expect 60FPS.

You should be able to play all games for the next 1-2 years at that resolution. Just expect to be turning down the details.

You shouldn't upgrade anything unless you're drowning in money.

depends on what you call "maxed out" lol. 1600x1050 and HDR is not a problem using only the options available in the menu... mine does 1600x1200 fine, and this game is not a shooter so it does not need 60fps. Once you enable AA and start tweaking all the candy that is hidden in the .ini file then you are stuck w/ a lower setting. (mine is 1280x1024)

beyond that, no-one knows what "new" games will do. Even crysis has posted system reqs but there is no telling if those will change... you just never know, but a good guess is that you are fine for a bit man. ;)

Well, I don't obviously expect 60fps outside, and I don't really need it either, as many have already mentioned, but certainly 25-30 in the most demanding situations could be hoped for, right? I guess I can turn down some of the shadows + amount of vegetation to get there at least. In the worst case, how bad do LCD monitors run in non-native resolution? Is it obviously noticible? I'm upgrading from the 17" Samsung CRT I have now :D...

interpolation (what an lcd does running lower res than native) is always discernable. That is the one big trade-off from a crt, you are stuck @ that res. Some are better then others, but all are worse then if you ran native.

particularly on oblivion, dont worry about fps! Just play the game... too many ppl worry about a number that means nothing to this game (or any single player rpg) when you can just enjoy the game. Turn it all up, play the game and you will just have fun w/ all that candy. I have never run any bench on it to see what I am getting b/c I dont care. It is fluid, and I have everything turned on. (granted, I dont really like the look of the game anyway but that is not the point ;) )

quit stressing over it and just enjoy the hardware you are getting. 'nuff said.

Well, you're right about not stressing over fps, I just wanted a ballpark idea, as I can't wait until friday to pick up the new system. You wouldn't be able to wait either, if you knew what I was upgrading from:

Some crappy motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 1600+
512mb RAM (at some low speed)
20gb HD
And since my last graphics card died on me:
Radeon 7000

Oh, and just to note, my new monitor runs @ 1680x1050, not 1600x1050 as I intially mentioned. Tx...

oh, I do understand pre-game jitters on a new build... but you are right, it would be double coming from a system like that ;)

and even 1680x1050 is pushing less pixels then a 1600x1200, so if a similar system can run 16x12 then your 16x10 is fine. ;) enjoy it man.

:D Yes, my old machine is a tad slow (and sounds like a lawnmower too...). The game I play most right now is Microsoft Hearts (on Windows 98 ), I love that game :D.

I hope the Sonata II + X1900XT are nice and quiet, are they?

Oblvion cant be played at 60FPS! If it can I would like to know how (outside)

why do you have such a shit cpu with a system like that, and obvious money to burn?

i mean a 750gig hd, plus a 320... wtf?

He's one of the people who buy the motherboard that will support C2D but dont want to spend money on the CPU so that he will add the C2D later, so he did that.

i'm doing that with am2, getting a 5000+, and then near the end of its compatibility, get an am3 processor and pop it in, and in the mean time... i won't suffer with a pd 805..uhhhg

You should be fine, I've got a similar setup (only I've got dual 7800GTX's). At 1600x1200, Half Life Episode 1 and Prey at max settings, 4x AA, 8x anistropic doesn't even studder. Runs like a charm.

did you look @ his oc? he is not "suffering" w/ anything. That machine is no slouch. As to your comment on the asynchronos hard drive config, why is that bad? if you had a 320 already and bought a 750 for storage or whatever where is the problem? Yes, raid is out but who cares... he has a nice system.

sorry, i didn't mean the raid was bad, i meant its expensive, very expensive, yet he has a pd 805. No it is not a slouch, but it could be much better simply by putting in any conroe, if like you say his mobo is compatible.

I think he is putting an e6700 in. Either way, he's got a very solid system.
