Hi i have an +3200 winchester cpu . I can get either an FX53 or an Opteron 144 for the same price . Is it worth upgrading , and if so which cpu is the better one ? I do the occasional overclock , but would like recommendations on standard (preferrable) and also overclocking performance .

Thanks

I'll go with the FX53 and O'C it to it's maximum.
What type of motherboard you have??

Why not consider an Athlon X2 ?

oops .

I have an AN8-Sli deluxe (asus) mobo .
1 Gb ddr 400 Ram
256 mb Asus 6800Gt video card .

Only looking at this upgrade as i can get these cpu's almost for free . otherwise i would stick to my 3200 !!!!

I am looking for recommendations at stock please as i can't be bothered clocking at the moment . what i need to know basically is fx53 > opty 144 >3200 ........... is this correct ?

The thing about the FX53 is that it has unlocked multipliers. That will definately help on your overclocking achievements.

The FX-53 is an old 130nm core, it lacks enough headroom (compared to a 90nm San Diego) to actually make use of the unlocked multipliers, not worth it IMHO.

The 144 is the lowest end S939 Opty, only worth it if you are going to OC as the extra cache doesn't outweight the 200MHz gap between it and your 3200+

It would be a good idea to tell us how much you are going to get those CPUs for, "almost for free" sounds too good to be true, there might be a catch.

about $200 nz dollars .

sounds like i will rather keep 3200 then . fx53 = old 130nm process and opty144 = slower "FSB" .

TRhanks for all your help .

The problem with the 144 has nothing to do with the FSB, its just clocked lower than the 3200+ you currently have, depending on when it was manufactured, it may have more OC headroom than your Winchester, nothing like playing the core lottery :?

200 NZD isn't a lot, a hundred more (including GST) will buy you a CPU worthy of replacing your 3200+.
