We currently have a intel 3.2GHZ HT + 1GB memory that runs 3 servers of ours fairly well. I would like to up that number to at least 5 with this new server that I am parting out below, do you see any problems with this happening. I have no expirence with real server hardware so I am trying to learn the does and donts. I dont really have a buget set as of yet but I am guessing somewhere around $2000.

I was looking at the following hardware:

Cost: ~$700
2x xeon woodcrest 5130 processors

Cost: ~$350
dual processor mobo

Cost: ~$380
2x 1gb sticks of kingston ECC FB memory (Do i have to use ECC & FB memory? man that stuff is expensive)

Cost: ~$200
2x seagate sata 7200.10 250GB drive running in raid 1.

Cost: ~$100
not sure what a good server power supply is are they the same as desktops? if so prolly something like this

Cost: ~$150
Case

what about cooling?
Operating system will be windows 2003 server.
anything else I am leaving out?

May want to look at CPU fans for your processors, unless you want to use the ones that come with the processors, your call. As for a case, i think this would do nicely.

With the money you save, you should look into getting some more ram in the future. Power supply seems to be fine. Good luck.

thx for the replies, yea the problem with that dell system is I can build it for $700 less, that could be another 4gigs of memory.

The main part of that $700 is honestly the warranty that comes with it. I understand exactly where you are going though.
