I keep hearing 90nm, 65nm and 45nm being tossed around. I've looked to find exactly what this describes, but perhaps someone here could explain what this means.

What do these numbers signify, and why is a lower number more beneficial?

Thanks.

The technology used to produce the cpu itself, the smaller the nm the closer the transistors are arranged, more in less space means faster chips are possible, usually with more heat.

AMD and Intel FABS are outfitted to produce a given size die, current AMD is 90nm and current intel is 65nm. 45nm is around the bend.
