Here is my plan.
The conroe is low Power/heat So it's an easy overclock with simple air cooling.
I'd like to do the least amount of effort.
I'd like to just set the multiplier to 12/13 and maybe minor other things.
I figure some ocz ram 800 2 gig sticks perhaps.
I had read http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core2duo-e6300.html
Seems as though that mobo/processor are extrmely limited.
I've built 4+ computers and do IT support but am the equivalent to a potato when it comes to overclocking simply haven't done.
I'd like to do an easy OC to 3 with possibility to later to 4.
I'm thinking 7900(256 video) and throwing in another cheaply later for sli.
(edited 9700--->7900)*****
I'm only looking at the dual sli with 32x(16x2).
probably 1 sata HDD 250 but would like upgradability for a striped or raid 5 array later.
Wondering if the ram needs to be paired i.e. start with 2 1 gig sticks and not just one.
Also wondering if ATI/nvidea chipests support each others cards in dual mode np.
because nvideas are all called sli while ati's are called Xfire.
Given I'd go with nvidea cards no doubt.
Original chipset i was looking at was ati though although I think maybe intel's would be fine.
Also yes I'm a little tipsy at work(allowed for today only)
Also power supplies I'm an idiot when it comes to these.
I'm guessing power shouldn't be a huge problem with conroe being low power but if I was to dual sli the power usage would skyrocket.

So some basic thoughts/referance points are....

(2 sticks at 4,5,5,?(forgot))
versus

(1 stick at 4,4,4,12)

Mobo I'm mostly torn on....
http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=110710&Category_Code=imb_775
( I heard OC limitations though on the fsb)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118003
(I'd find cheaper but basically copper HS with quiet fan)
then of course no clue on the power supply.
Case I don't care I have some same as cd drives.

Thanks in advance.
Also have a small bet about money for performance with my friend getting a pentium D Oc'ing it to 4ghz with water cooling.

An ATI 9700 in SLI
You do IT support? 8O

I said I was a little tipsy.
Geforce 7900 yay correct my spelling and grammar while your at it.
I just transposed the 7 and the 9.
never said ati though.

Seeriously though if I could get an opinion or 2 instead of 15 people arguing about how I transposed a 7 and 9 because I'm not use to this keyboard.

Pair the ram, 2x1gigs.
Pick mobo chipset based on video:
SLI and Xfire not the same. For SLI I would wait for the NVidia 590 chipset mobos for Conroe coming out very soon.
Power Supplies:
There is a whole section in this forum on the subject. IMHO:
For max performance and max $: PC Power & Cooling
For excellent performance and min $: FST(Fortron)
Also the Antec Truepower series are good, (but not all posters will agree with me on this).

Well first of all you can just pump up the clock like you wanted to unless you get the E6800. The lower models are locked(correct me if im wrong). You can go down, but not up on the clock. The only thing you can do to oc is juice up the FSB. As for the mob if you can, wait till the new Nvidia 590 chipsets come out. If you dont want to wait for them, well to bad unless you allready got the cpu in hand, it will be a few weeks b4 you get one =)

Is the E6600 locked also?
I figured only the lower two were which had the reduced 2Mb cache.
I'd have to double check this though.
I have some time.
I'm just sick of my laptop.
I know laptops suck,
But I've moved 16 times last 3 years.
So moving a desktop/monitor etc was getting old.
Rebuilt my old and sold, for most the funds to get my current laptop.

Yeah, the 6600 will be locked. Only the "Extreme" is unlocked but it costs a Grand. The 6600 makes more sense for $350 and it has the 4MB of cache. You can deal with it thru the FSB.
I would get the WD Caviar 250GB/16MB for the same $ as the Samsung. Its at newegg, search part 22144701.
Ram choice depends on the mobo. You may have to turn up the voltage in BIOS to 2.0 or so for some of the types you chose to run well.
The Zalman 9500 is good and popular.

Looks like I'll probably wait for nforce chipset to be out in a decent sli2 mobo then.
At which time I'd imagine the 6600 will have dropped.
Thank for the note on the 16MB(cache) HDD.
I figure ocz should be high enough quality but so long as they're not much over $200 may be able to get higher quality depending on prices at the time.
