I have seen some posts about upgrading a socket 5 486, or a socket 7 K-6 mixed in with posts about the latest hardware and they were pretty much ignored.
What do you think? Do you think there are still some older systems in operation out there in industry, schools or privatly?
Do you think these systems sometimes may break down and need trouble shooting?
Is it possible that an individual might be intimidated by the "CPU" or "MOTHERBOARD & CHIPSET" sections, and not wish to post about old hardware there?
Any suggestions as to what title such a "vintage hardware" section should have and where it should be located, if indeed needed?

I think it is a good idea. I believe there are a lot of older systems out in the real world
but some people don't want to ask for help for fear of mockery. I would love to help all that I
can and have several older systems still in use. Most home or office work stations don't have to
be super fast to get the real work done.
My 2¢.

hehe...the CPU and MOTHERBOARD section are intimidating....and i do own many old computers and i have loads of fun taking them apart and putting them back together...and i agree and that section for vintage computers is needed and will be well appreciated...by at least me...

Ouch!...after slapping my forehead. Now why didn't I think of that? >jk< I think that is an excellent idea pike. Maybe Fredi will honor your idea, and make some happy campers in here.

I think your idea is good, but how usefull are old "vintage" computers anymore for people that actually visit this site? At one point I would have said they were great for word processing, internet and e-mail, but I use a P90 (getting it replaced this week) and it can barely pull off the internet. I suppose it would work for dialup, but broadband is bottlenecked. That leaves word processing and basic e-mail.
So who does this proposed section apply to? Word processing and e-mail only on a dialup connection? Not many people that visit this site. Remember that most people here are enthusiasts.
Of course it can't hurt to have it. In that case though why not add a vintage computer, Windows 3.1, and DOS section?
Your last point is pertinent. Most "vintage" sys of the 486 DX-4 100 to P-133 run with Win 95. Yes some special cases are DOS machines and others Win 3.1.
My present work pc (not my 2 Poseïdon operation sys) has been, since about 8 months now, a p-100, 32 ram, with cable connection and works fine (of course a little slow and no sound ). Before that my work pc had been for over 1 year a 486 DX-4 100 and it also was ok.
(had put 16 ram when it is actually 32 for the p-100) doh!
A trend I have noticed, is for computer enthusiasts to have several pcs in their family. Some of these pcs will of course be "vintage", as those for young kids. There still is and increadible amound of nice DOS games and well written DOS software out there.

It can be really helpfull to make a different section for old-time computers. Maybe a whole section for it with Hardware, Software and Overclocking forums. I think people with old hardware can find faster help in it, but the question always is: 'What is old?'. Is a 450 MHz Pentium 3 old, or does it belong to the newer PCs... difficult, difficult.
BTW I have some old hardware too, 2/3/486 mobo's, a Pentium 75 Gateway server that will soon be running on Linux, My dad has an ol Compaq 166 MHz from his work, and my brother has my old P3 450 MHz. I like old hardware, because you can learn much form it and practice with it.
Yes I think it would be a good Idea. I've been here from the beginning when it was http://www.sysdoc.pair.com. And as stated above I've read some crude remarks posted by some members reguarding older hardware. Some as blatant as "throw that old sh_t away and buy this.
Definately not what the person wanted to hear. They wanted to know how to fix the problem with what hardware they have.
i totally agree with you guys...i have a 486 and a couple 286 and 386's....its fun messing with em....with a seperate old hardware forumn, i could post all the dumb things i've done to them...without getting flamed in the CPU section

Just last wendsday, a coworker brought me a Okidata OL 410-e. Thought it was a dot matrix at the time. He asked $30 CAD for it. ok. It even had a HP scanner attachement part.
I get it home and the wife says: hey that looks like a laser printer. Dah! It is. Cool. Set it up as network printer for the two kids on second floor. Prints nice for about $17 USD and laser = no damn $50 cartridges to change every 2-3 months. Yes it's only b&w and yes the toner is more $ at purchase, but still.

Yep nice looking too, with a bunch of LEDs. hi hi hi
Faster than an inkjet. Print quality is about the same as a modern $100-150 inkjet, but cheaper per page Will have to find the users manual at Okidata's web site.
You found work for this summer there svol? Or you take summer courses!
