Errr.. those choices don't make any sense.

You should list what you have now.

If your budget is aimed in saving money for the best you can buy, that should determine what system is best for you.

I can see getting an 805 with a MB that would work with a C2D later on, but you might as well wait.

But if you want a system now, then go for the 4200 setup.

the D805 is pentium D not conroe.
It's last Gen.
Get an Am2 w/ sli(x2 I'd say) and ddr2.
If you plan on having for a bit leave yourself some room.
Or if you want to pay a little more or can wait a month I'd say get a conroe with one of the new nforce chipsets.

I just upgraded to a 4200x2 from an 2700XP, kept everything apart from motherboard so it made a dirt cheap upgrade. If you have existing DDR ram, AGP card etc then stick with the 4200x2 until you are ready to upgrade everything

I forgot to say - I went the Asrock motherboard route as it allows you to use you existing AGP cards (but can handle PCI-E when you get one). My plan is to go CoreDuo but to do so requires me to leave my ATI X800XT and 2 Gb of ram behind so that suddenly gets a lot more expensive.

So iw as right about the ram. Listen the only difference between socket 939 and am2 is that am2 is more future proof thats all, Currently they perform about the same but int he future when new tech comes out am2 will leave 939 in the dust.

there is a performance perk, albeit a small one... but you also have a longer upgrade path. On 939 what you see is what you get, there will be no new procs there. I seriously doubt that ddr3 will see the light of an amd proc for a good while yet. They just went to ddr2, and will still see performance bennies w/ faster speeds there.

w/ your current ddr sticks, you could re-use them in your new system but then you have that old mobo and proc that will do nothing w/o them. If you build a whole new system then you can use that old one as a server or home theater setup... anything really. No sense having them sit out all the fun. ;)

Drop to a X2 3800+ so save some money.

If you are re-using your DDR and not moving to DDR2, the best choice for the short term (since long term WILL require you to at some point upgrade your memory), is the 3800x2 by FAR. The above mentioned AsRock board with both the AGP and PCIe x16 slots is only $66, bringing your total with S&H to about $225 and leaving the option to even use their upgrade card for AM2 and DDR2. So, then you could even have an AM2 AGP system! lol!
