im building a new system soon using Conroe E6400 or E6300

which one to buy?
i will be overclocking for best performance vs silence on air whilst using a zalman cooler.

using an e6300 saves me a nice amount on an e6400 (im a student and not made of money :p) but i could stretch to a E6400

if i can make anywhere near 3ghz stable on air (with a zalman) whilst keeping it quiet i will be more than happy.

which one to get

depends on what you're building comp for, if its is for gaming - you will not have a big increase in performance (1 - 2 %) with extra 2mb cache. If you're going to use it for video editing/rendering than you'll have as much as 10% gain in perf with 4mb.
Here is an article on c2d 4mb vs. 2mb cache

i will be using it for gaming, media and work (uni student) no video editing or rendering.

so E6300 or the E6400 it is..

Which one?

i want to over clock to the best performance i can get on AIR using a zalman cooler whilst still keeping it quiet..
im also on a budget :p

On air cooling you should be able to fairly easily clock to 3 ghz.
Check on the mobo's.
I know I'm waiting for nforce boards.

c2d is known to be a good OCer so, in my opinion e6300 or e6400 will do just fine. I would go with e6400 cause you might get it a little bit further than e6300 8)

On average, tests show about 3.5% advantage to the 4mb versions. Core 2s overclock very good, so you can make up the difference with a decent overclock. E6300 and E6400 can probably do 3-3.5GHz on stock cooling.

only if it doesnt hit an FSB wall, that is the main problem of core 2s in overclocking

Yes the e6300 and e6400 can hit 3ghz with that cooler, if you get the right mobo. If you can wait for the new nvidia 590 boards to come out you may be able to get more. With the current mobos the best OC'er seems to be the Gigabyte DS3. People are hitting 3.5ghz on ait with the e6400.

well im only really aiming for 3ghz right now with cooling on air because i want to keep noise down (even with a zalman im a realstickler for quiet)

i will most likely be using an asus P5W DH deluxe Mobo
if i can use the e6300 easily with this for that OC i will go for that

Are you planning on going Crossfire? If so then yah get the P5W DH. If not, YES you can hit 3ghz easily on the DS3, for $100 less.

Extra 2mb of cache?? What extra 2mb of cache.?
They both have 2mb of cache. Please try to actually read the question before replying to it. K?

LOL, the topic was originally posted as 4mb vs. 2mb cache, then it moved to "e6300 vs e6400 (price, oveclocking on air etc)". I explained to the guy that extra 2mb doesn't give you that much of a perf boost. Then, he decided to go with either e6300 or 6400 and it went from there.

 Don't make silly comments

It really is a sweet mobo if your not going SLI/Crossfire. My only reccomedation is to try and wait it out for the newer boards coming out soon. If you dont have your CPU yet youll have no choice but to wait, they wont be available for a couple weeks most likely.
