Well I have isolated the problem after a complete hard reset and reload of
all my apps one at a time, testing web browsing as I go. It seems PIE Plus
by Reensoft is the source of the problem. Even though in it's options you
can set it to pretend to be IE6 this doesn't seem to work and in fact resets
the settings from RegKing which do the same thing. Web sites that do a
browser check don't get the response they want so no web browsing of that
site.
The fix:
1. Do not load PIE Plus, uninstalling doesn't seem to always fix the problem
(I like PIE Plus so I'm not uninstalling)
2. Load RegKing and reset the registry setting(s) for PIE to answer as
IE5.5, soft reset, tada. If it flakes out again, repeat.
