Can anybody suggest a real world test of how effective your dual core chip is working?

Am I right in thinking that hard drive access is the limiting factor and if two processes want to access your drives at the same time then it doesn't matter how many cores you have :?: .

WEll obviously if the hard drive is in the equation than it will effect the outcome, but when it isn't used for programs its not....

i dont kmnow of any real world tests, experiment for yourself. For me, going to dual core meant an insane reall world performance increase (i would estimate 40% improvement at same frequency as single core) in my multitasking (playing a video game as well as some other program/switching programs)

Thats pretty much as real world as you get, running multiple programs at once.
