Hello,

My video card just died, so I was thinking about doing some updates, but I have a limited budget. Around 2k

Current system:
- Motherboard:
DFI 875P LANPARTY 875P-T
- CPU:
P4/3.4 GHz 800M LGA775 550
- Ram:
Two sticks of: DDRAM 1024MB|OCZ PC3200 400MHZ
- Video card:
BFG 512MB NVidia 6800 Ultra (Just died)

Possible new system:
- Motherboard:
ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe Socket T (LGA 775) NVIDIA nForce4 SLI Intel Edition ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
- Ram:
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SD - RAM DDR2 675 (PC2 5400) Unbuffered System Memory Model TWIN2X2048-5400c4 - Retail
- Video card:
XFX PVT71UZDF9 Geforce 7950GX2 1GB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Xtreme Video Card - Retail

Is the new Core Duo needed to take advantage of fast graphics? Perhaps with this system I can update the CPU later? Will I be missing out on performance in HL2 and BF2 till I upgrade the CPU as well?

Do I have to upgrade my ram now too with this new motherboard, or can I use my old ram?

Look into RMA'ing the card first of all. it's well worth calling them or emailing them to get it RMA'd. Save yourself a ton of money.

But! if you're using this as an excuse to upgrade. 2000 bucks can get you a killer upgrade.

I recommend waiting for the core 2 duo.
-Look into getting the nvidia geforce 7900GTX or ATI x1900xtx
-get a core 2 duo compatible motherboard. 975's are iffy so unless it says "core 2 duo ready" for specs don't bother with it. All 965 chipsets, to my knowledge, support core 2 duo
-to my knoweldge you do not need DDR2-800. For myself i got Corsair XMS DDR2 675 2x 1gb sticks for 2 gigs total. I beleive ddr2-800 is for overclocking. at least that is the impression i've been getting.

If core 2 duo's arn't out by the time you make the official purchases you can get a cheap celeron D for 47 bucks until it does come out.

My favorite brands are Asus, Abit, gigabyte, corsair, crucial, msi, evga. Zipzoomfly.com and newegg.com are pretty good places to order from.

good luck! =)

you need new ram, g.skill ddr2 800mhz recommended. go w/ core 2 duo, 7950GX2 is overkill unless your running 1600X1200, 7900gt does fine, get that

Yeah, I'm running 1600x1200 on a dell 2405fpw

When do the core 2 duo's come out?

I will have to look into 975 and 965, I have no current knowledge on what that is, but I assume that it the new Intel chipset's

there are some information on the front page of tomshardware. Just click on the links about core 2 duo and you can also do a google search.

975's and 965's are indeed intels chipsets that support core 2 duo. the 975 are actually older chipsets but the newer revision motherboards and/or bios supports the core 2 duo.

ya just google it up and do some research =)
