Wristwatches

Gettin the hunny a watch me thinks for his bday in April... I had other thoughts but it sounds like he's getting them on his own *sniffle and I know JACK about watches!

I'm in the process of quizzing his brother right now for his tastes and style and stuff (we're both non jewlery wearers, got nothing to really base it off of..) But ya, gettin this engraved with a nice saying and stuff ^_^

Anyways, check out the site and gimme some suggestions on what men really like. I like the plain ones like This one I'm not into flashy myself

Lookin at a 200 dollar budget here, keep em reasonable!

Thanks!

I like Seikos.

If you can, buy from a jeweler and you can talk them down in price anywhere from 25% to 60%. Huge mark up on this stuff.

You want jeweled movement. Quartz is the basic but if you can find something with sapphire, you have a high quality watch. They're not as expensive as places make them out to be. I'd find a place you can call and talk to on the phone.. then talk them down in pricing. Look at a $250 watch and offer $175, see what they'll work with.

They'll make their money on them.

My friend worked at a place.. a $2,500 watch would cost me $700. Tungsten Carbine Steel? Only 2 things could scratch it.. itself or diamonds. That's how high the mark up is on that stuff.

ya, I'm just using the site to find stuff I like before I go trodding all over the city :)

I can't wear watches myself, I break em... something about magnetism or something

What's the quarts/sapphire thing??

Jeweled movement. The gears inside range from cheap plastic, metal, quartz and up.

Man-made sapphire jeweled watches tend to be the best. Some are known to use diamonds and all that. They don't chip, they don't wear down, etc.. that's how they keep better time.

When you look at a watch.. watch the second hand move. If its very smooth, its a good watch. If it 'clicks' or jumps, its a cheaper watch. The smoother the hand moves, generally the better the watch.

Stay away from name brand designer watches.. Kenneth Cole Reaction, Guess, etc. They're nice but you're mainly paying for the name over the quality of the watch. Stick to brands that just make watches and you really can't go wrong.

Depending on what you want.. the leather strap, all metal, etc.

If you want it engraved, probably on the back of the face? You'll have to get the seller to remove the place, engrave it, then replace the plate.. But you might be able to buy the tool for a couple dollars that they use to remove the back plates.

Depending how serious you are, I can give you a suggestion on a saying......

My Wife & I built a Grandfather clock for ourselves, on our 13th anniversary..... We didn't want to put anything on the engraved plate inside the clock saying for our 13th..... We though long & hard on what to put on the plate....... After a lot of thought, we finally came up with our little saying:

"A Timepiece For A Timeless Love"

Only use it if your serious about the guy & he you!!!!! You could scare him off with something like that.....

Yea, that's right!!!! RC has a soft side, every now & then..... [shurg]

I've been thinking of "To track the time we share" since I've been doin the school thing and not seein that much of him.

Also, depending on how quickly he starts tattooing and liking it, "Time till your next appointment!" or something silly like that ^_^ (hopefully he'll start inkin next week!)

A stop watch would be a good gag gift for him.......

Ah, Tats..... I'm not into them myself, other than I have one.... I also had one removed.....

My Tats cost me some jobs before I figured what was going on...... After I got my degree, I couldn't get in the field......

I wrote some Thank You letters to some of the firms that turned me down, hoping it would make the difference & didn't hear anything.... Finally a firm wrote me back & said they would've hired me, except for my Eagle Tat on my forearm......

I bought a long sleeved dress shirt & got the next job, hands down.....

However I was never able to wear a short sleeved shirt to work...... Lots of fun working in Mexico in a long sleeved shirt I'll tell you..... Going to company picnics in a long sleeved shirt was a thrill as well.....

I wish I hadn't gotten a tat........ Hell, after all these years it just looks like a big blue blob on my arm..... You can't see any detail in it what so ever anymore.... [shrug]

Here is some more of his art, he's gettin really damn good at his lines and colors now, most of his recent stuff is at the shop though and not uploaded. I can't wait to see his first tattoos, they're gonna be just lines of course, like chinese symbols and stuff till he gets the feeling of the machine

I have a fossil, its fairly inexpensive, nice looking and by far the best watch i have ever owned. it has literally been around the world with me and i have had it for about 4 years now, and only had to change the battery once.

excellent craftsmanship, imho.

Reply to mrface

Me too. Beautiful deep blue face. Need a new battery though, and you have to take them to a proper repair shop :(

By the By.... I'm grilling a batch of salsa & drinking a Coors right about now.....

Reply to RCPilot

MMmmmmm! I'm having grilled leftovers for lunch right now, myself. Sorry to hear about the Coors, though.

Reply to Auburn9698

I'm having grilled afterbirth with offensive pus sauce.

It got to 40 yesterday.... First time we have been above freezing in 34 days.... Felt like spring.... Fired up the grill & man did it smell great!!!!!

Today it's about 45 & well, I'm out grilling again... Salsa & those steak things.... Marinated in lime juice, sliced thin, & wrapped up in a tortilla....

Reply to RCPilot

Offensive pus sauce? Just write "Coors" next time. It's quicker.

Reply to Auburn9698

Nice. A chance to thaw out a bit, huh? No more lows of -1 and highs of 8 this week? As soon as I saw our "highs 66-70 all week," forecast, I knew I was going to grill a bunch.

Reply to Auburn9698

It needs a dash of urine and some vaginal discharge to qualify as Coors.

I'm a ways away from that weather yet..... But I'll take what I get... Sun feels good on the face today.....

We've lost a lot of snow the last 2 days.... I bought a bunch of garden seeds the other day.... I'm getting ready for the spring I believe.....

this is one i would pick.

its a dive watch as im a diver.

just my opinion though.

The wife got me one of this series for Valentines Day last year. Cannot beat the geek factor of "atomic" clock, even if it only works in the CONUS and Canada.

Garmin has a fairly small wrist wearable GPS, but the battery life is atrocious (90 mins)

Seiko, as previously mentioned, is really good stuff. Dig the kinetic design-- you don't have to wind every couple days.

Tag Heuer makes a good watch. Just damned expensive though.

Reply to mugz

I'd be a diver too! If I wasn't in the middle of the prairies! :D

heheh I got some tips from his brother, he likes plain and simple, like me ^_^ I guess he had a similar watch to the one I had originally picked out and he wore it for years, so it's a go!

la!~

Reply to CHEEZball

I heard you're already a muff diver. True?

Reply to Auburn9698

yeah i like plain and simple too.

my last watch was a 20$ one from wal-mart.
it stood up to 3 atmosphere,s underwater. in cozumel
and a cold under water zinc mine in joplin MI.

he probably only wants one that is reliable
and accurrate.

my suggestion is a 50 to 100$ one and you could spend
the rest of the money on something else for him.

or for you

Seiko is getting talked up.. Mainly because it they have those plain and simple watches but then those fancy looking ones too.

I thought of something though.

Watch out for crazy low priced watches. With the changing of Day Lights Savings, watches that automatically adjusted based on the date/calendar on them might go for cheap.. you wouldn't want to get something like that.

I didn't think about that until a few minutes ago.. not sure how some change, figure if they have a calendar they do it by date..

Reply to Riser

We don't have daylight savings here, and don't digital watches only do that?

I've settled on Armani, I know, name brand, but this is nice and simple, but the money's in the name... and now when someone says "hey nice watch!" he can say "it's Armani" and be all ritzy :D

I buy alot for myself.. not really giving him a chance to get me anything lol If I want/need it, I get it. So instead of me getting myself something nice like usual, it's his turn :)

I can't wait till my bday though.. he's on a theme of doing some real from the heart things, like last year he drew a picture of white lillies for me (my fav) so I would always have them around, and christmas he got a bunch of our pictures redone in water colour and inks by a artist :D What's next?!

Reply to CHEEZball

Armani eh?

You want the best thing on him to be his watch? Its always been something I've been funny about though. I look at someone and see how they're dressed but then you see a really nice watch. Its cool if its a gift. :)

I wouldn't want to be a Chav anything myself. :P

Chav is a derogatory slang term in popular usage throughout the UK. It refers to a subculture stereotype of a person who is uneducated, uncultured and prone to antisocial or immoral behaviour. The label is typically, though not exclusively, applied to teenagers and young adults of white working-class or lower-middle class origin. Chav is used for both sexes, where a male chav is sometimes referred to as a chavster and a female as a chavette. ...

Ok, so it won't link.

Dont they sell watches at Walmart these days?

Christ, if the shite keeps accurate time then its good enough.

I know. I know. We all like the idea of a fancy piece of mechanical ingenuity strapped to our wrists. And we all like the idea of flashing said pieces to those we're keen to impress.

Dont get me wrong: I'm not immune to the impulses suggested by marketers of luxury consumerism; but I cant help but question the ludicrous asking price of some of these watches.

i agree! i would be happy with a 50 to 100$ watch.
but then again i like sporty/durable types.

not the shiny fancy ones that are 200$ or more.

Reply to sirheck

Yeah, that's a fair price range.

I'd even go lower. To be frank: I swim, fish cycle a bit so something that can keep time and is digital, well, they can be picked up for like 5-10 bucks and last years.

I will say this though. I had enough brains to purchase 5 expensive suits while I was a sales executive at a big energy firm. At the time, these Italian fockers cost me greatly in savings, but I loved the look and the quality.

Now, that said, a nice Rolex to wear with those suits...well, it would just top it off.

Like I said, I suffer from the same impulses as everyone else. :)
