Is it safe to overclock my refurbished X800XL using ATI tool with stock cooling, or should I get after market cooling? I did this with my 9800 pro with stock cooling, and didn't have any problems. Please advise.

Do you have a picture of the card so that we can see what the cooler looks like? If you have an R430 core like most of the X800XL cards you will be lucky to be able to overclock it to 450MHz from stock 400MHz. You might be able to overclock the ram though if it came with the 1.6ns memory chips.

I don't think that the temps should rise too much since I don't expect you to be able to overclock much. What are your current temps?

I knew I wouldn't be able to overclock this card much. It was the same with my 9800 pro, but every little bit counts. I've got the R430 core, but how do I know if I have 1.6ns memory? I'm fairly new at this, so I don't know at what temps I'm currently running.

Well, the real way to find out is to take the cooler off but you don't want to do that if you aren't going to change the cooler. Just try to overclock the memory. The 1.6ns memory is specified to run at 600MHz(DDR1.2GHz) however you won't necessarily be able to run it that high. I have an X800GTO with 1.6ns memory and initially it overclocked to 528MHz. I recently took the cooler off and added some thermal compound to the memory chips to see if it will allow me to overclock a little higher. I'm not sure yet but I think it is going to allow me to run the memory at 540MHz now.

If you have 2.0ns memory, it will max out around 500MHz.

I unlocked my R430 X800GTO so it is equivelant to an X800XL so our systems are probably pretty close performance wise. Is your card AGP or PCI-e? What CPU are you running?

That's what I've been hearing. I perfectly happy with the upgrade. I just wanted to see what I could get out of it without frying my new card.
