Not only kill, first it'll take it into a back alley and give it an Ana| then it'll take its TDP and take a piss on its "netburst" specs. Then the Kill.
I'm building a new pc in the near future [needs to be ready for mid september]. Just want some advice on what cpu to go with. Some of my choices:
£124 E6300 Core 2 Duo *OEM* 1.86GHz 1066FSB 2MB Cache
£124 Intel Pentium D 930 (BX80553930) Dual Core 3.00GHz FSB 800 2 X 2Mb Cache 775
or maybe I should go AMD (i'm also open to suggestions)?
Cheers
You people seem to be forgetting the price for a new conroe "system". .... namely .. the motherboard , not just the cpu.
Inamabilis , if you're on a budget , I suggest you DON'T get a conroe .... at least not just yet(at least a few mths I'd say). Although the cpu maybe cheap, the motherboad isn't. The mobo options are very poor(obviously like with everything new). And for those available around launch, the price is through the roof compared to AMD socket 939 (yes, they are still available).
Since you're thinking of e6300 , I assume your budget isn't skyhigh. I would suggest Socket939 AMD X2 3800+ or 4200+ with Asus A8N32-SLI motherboard. If you're not OverClocking, then any DDR400 would suffice. This rig would be roughly equal to e6300 in pretty much everything. This should last you a long while before you hit a bottle neck ... cpuwise that is.
Pricewise, Conroe(youngest model) , AMD X2 and Pentium D should be roughly equal. So DON'T get Pentium D as it is quite a bit slower than an amd X2.
My personal opinion , concentrate your funds on a great graphics card IF you are a gamer as an AMD X2 system is blazingly fast for any current gen game. It will still survive at least 1 more generation of games.
IF you are mostly doing audio/video encodng or multimedia ... then concentrate your funds on the fastest cpu (not GPU) and lots of ram.
IF you want the best of both worlds , then I don't know what to say..... xcept get a second job.
E6300 would equal to that of the X2 4800 and 960. And right now the price of the Pentium D series are still high to compare with the Core 2 performance. You can't go wrong with the E6300.

Also, Conroe will wipe its own a$$ with anything related to Netburst and K8.
It'll Tie The "netburst" to a Bed Corner and Give it prison style And make it call him "You're my Sugar Daddy" and the K8 it'll just have it a plain 69 and 96 and ever other Degree it can put it in.. Cuse the k8 it's still pretty much like a daughter of the Core 2 Duo when benchmarked along with the P4>PD>k8>CD>C2D>K8L>K10>??.

Since you need the PC ready by mid-September, go with an AMD socket AM2 setup. Get the X2 4200+. It is roughly just as good as a E6300. The motherboards are also MUCH cheaper than Core 2 Duo boards, like the other guy said. Just get good ram and you'll be all set. The reason for going AM2 is because if you even manage to get a Core 2 Duo by the time you need the PC built, the prices will still be very high.
OK, so at the time of writing the E6300 is out of stock (for good reason apparently) but the X2 is more than twice as expensive? - The difference in cost of MBs cant make up for that surely?
actually i would say the pentium d series overclocks better than both the amd x2 and the e series duos...i have reached 4.2 sable on a pd 2.8 thats insane......i think if you know what your doing those 3 cpus are pretty equal with the lead going to the duos. the duos are selling used for around 120 bucks and the pd are a mere 80......you do what you want i just stick to my quad :-p
