Backup tape capacity is not used

I have a strange occurance with windows backup: I use Fuji DG4-150 tape
which have an uncompressed capacity of 20GB to backup a database and some
critucal files on a daily basis. However (and I'm not sure that this was
different before I arrived at this company) the backup process gets to about
11GB and then requests another tape. To backup just over 19GB of
uncompressed data to tape takes three tapes.

This is clearly not correct, since I have enabled hardware compression which
should at least shave off a percentage of the size of the backup, although
some of the files a .RAR compressed volumes.

Steps I have taken:
Formatted tapes manually
Used at least three different tapes
Turned hardware compression on

I've attached the logfile.

The config:
Single processor Dell Poweredge 1400 (800MHz PIII) with a 384MB of RAM
2 x 36GB HDD's on an Adaptec AIC 8799 Ultra 160 SCSI controller
tape drive: Acrchive Python 06408 SCSI drive.
OS is Win2K AS with all service packs and patches applied.

Any help on this much appreciated.

Try running a cleaning tape through the heads.

I did it, ran the cleaning tape about 6 times, to make sure it's effective,
but not one byte of difference on any tape I use. It always stop at exactly
the same point being 11.4 GB and requests a new tape.

I've just done it with a brand new tape... no success.

Any other ideas? There are many messages and articles on backups on the
web, but none that match this phenominon.

regards,
Roland

Further to my previous post:

It transpired that a whole batch of tapes have must have gone faulty, since
I found another fairly unused tape in a drawer, popped it in and viola!
backed up +20GB without a hitch.

Off to buy new tapes...
