Athlon 2700 Xp in Sockwt 754

Hi all. I have a couple of questions which i can't seem to answer. I used to have (still own it but its up in the attic) a Athlon Xp 2700+ cpu on socket A mboard. I got myself a Socket 754 ECS K8 Board with a Sempron 2800+ 64bit, hoping to speed up my computer. I've overclocked it to 1.9Ghz.
But the Sempron seems slower and the question is, should this be so. Is the Sempron actually slower than the 2700 and have I made a complete prat of myself by buying that chip.
I also take it there's no way to place the Athlon xp into the socket 754, if it turns out that's the faster chip. Sorry its seems a dumb question, but just can't find any comparisons of these two, especially the 64bit sempron.

IMO both chips are nearing obsolesency however.

Cheers, but have read that report a good few times. Doesn't really answer my question. I still think I'd be better off upgrading my graphics before any cpu speed is needed. Agree?

i think the athlon xp is faster than the sempron, as it runs at 1.6 ghz vs. 2.13 from athlon xp. On the other side, you can overclock your sempron, i'd guess to the same frequency to the xp, maybe more. If you dont want to overclock, if it's a 90nm sempron, will give you less power consumption/noise

Yeah, that seem right and with the socket 754 i think it should be ok. Have a new 120Gb SATA hard drive which will take the place of my current IDE master and will loose the slave Ide drive which i think is partially corrupted. I think I may just bottle encking my speed or something as my firefox, itunes and IE all take way to long to load up. Maybe a clean boot of windows onto the new drive will do the trick. I'm gonna wait a little longer for a new upgrade mboard, processor and g card untill after summer i think.

oh yeah, re-installing windows when changing motherboard is very very important, not to say mandatory.
