The veterans have seen this a thousand times before but I have a question. I just bought an AMD 1700+ / 256 DDR / ASUS MB with a chaintech g220-64vc GeForce2 Ti 64 MB DDR Video with TV out. With that video card I need to find a monitor that DOES NOT suck like the one I have now. Unfortunately I am limited to about $200. I don't care if it's flat or what ever, I just want something that supports higher refresh rates at higher resolutions and has good picture quality in general. Hopefully something that supports at least 1600 - 1200 at a decent frequency.

Good luck finding a monitor under $200 that can display 1600x1200 at even a decent refresh rate. Actually, even with a good monitor, your video card may not display that rez well either. I noticed a big improvement going from a GF2 to a Radeon in image quality at 1280x1024 even. Hopefully, you're not very picky but you're mostly limited to a 17" with that price restriction and very few 17" will display 1600 rez above 60hz anyway.

For under $200US you are limited to a 17in monitor. For a 17in, the optimal resolution is 1024x768. I have two 19in and I only run them at 1152x864, 1280x1024 is too small on them. 1600x1200 would be rediculously small on a 17in monitor. At that resolution, you will need to up your price to at least $1000US and get a 21in or larger monitor.

[copied from my other response]I got the Samsung 753DF from Best Buy for $199US with a $50US rebate for my partner. Its a great monitor for the price and I ended up buying 2 more for my other partner and little brother.

I agree that on a 17" monitor 1600x1200 is too small. I recently purchased a 19" monitor to use that resolution. On a 17" you can reasonably use 1280x1024. But in any case, I don't know a 17" monitor that can do 1600x1200@85Hz.
You could always buy a Samsung 955DF (19" cheapo monitor - $196 on pricegrabber) and use that at 1600x1200@68Hz or 1280x1024@79Hz. Or you could try an LG795FT Plus for $197 which is a 17" perfect flat and will do 1600x1200@75 although you might prefer 1280x1024@90Hz.

For what it's worth, I just purchased an NEC FE700 flat screen CRT Aperture Grille at Staples for $200 w/ $20 mail in rebate. Great looking monitor, crisp picture. Resolution, like posted before, best at 1024x768 @85hz or 1280x1024 @75hz.
