I have just bought an Epson RX425 (RX420 series), and am experiencing a
problem at boot up.

If the printer is turned on first, the computer will pause part way through
booting, with a black screen. If I then turn off the printer, the PC
continues to boot as normal.

Any help?

Si.

covers booting options when you hit f8 during system boot.
See if it boots ok into safe mode for starters.
Try the enable boot logging option.
Check that you have XP drivers, if you are using drivers
off a CD that came with the printer they may not be XP ones,
and in any event probably out of date.
Do an uninstall on the printer, it it cures the boot stalling,
try a re-install of the drivers.
