Hi everyone,

My friend got a GIGABYTE 7900GTX today, and installed it in his rig with the latest driver.

His rig: Athlon64 3500+
1G DDR400 RAM (2x512MB)
2X160G HDD
7900GTX
580W PSU (HYPER X)

Problem: Played Far Cry, but the game configuration program detects the 7900GTX as a low end card and automatically changes the settings to low!!
After manually set everything to very high@ 1280x1024, plays smoothly, but the water can't display properly (solved by setting the "water details" to medium)
After every ten minutes playing, system will die for rever.

Any idea what's going on?

P.S: When playing Most Wanted, can make all settings to max @ 1280x1024, but not very smooth.

Thank you very much indeed!

I wouldnt be the least bit suprised if it was a system bottleneck.
Just looking @ the specs, that GTX is very much held back by the RAM and CPU. I'm not saying this necessarily should cause the slow down that your seeing; but it does present the imbalance in your friends machine.

Could be a number of small issues; just start troubleshooting.

Thanks for that. But he can play Harf Life 2 with everything set to max @ 1280x1024 running flawlessly.

I'll come back after we trying the Quake4 and Serious Sam2.

Question is: Suppose it is the cpu which slows the Graphics card down, but howcome the game detects card as low end and turns all eyecandy off?

Nope... amd 3500 is the proc that can run any today games. It wont bottleneck. Maybe you could get a few more FPS with a faster proc but what proc? most games arent using multicore and if they are its to a small degree.
best athlons are 2.4GHz and that one is 2.2 (not counting FX).
So its about the best out there. I have it and I have the x2. It doesnt bottlenect any game.

As for the low quality setting it's just the game that doesnt recognize the card dont whine about it it's a good card. Probably you need the latest nvidia drivers to correct the errors wioth water or the latest game patch maybe even this wont fix your thing.
The proc is fine you dont need anything better. When games begin to actualy use the multicore procs then you can upgrade to x2 but for now it's not neccessary it can even slow down games cos most games have issues with dual core processors.

One more thing you cant expect everything too run smooth games have bugs, software in general all sort of problem you get some I get some others get some. It's life.

The CPU and the RAM are not bottlenecking. It's most likely a driver issue. Make sure all your drivers are up to date.

TigerDirect.com has the 7900GTX for $150 if anyone is interested. A new NVIDIA price-cut has taken effect on several cards.

Worth a look.

Newegg has the 7800GTX for $100.

Get the latest Nvidia drivers and make sure you patch Far Cry to the latest version.
