I have two Linksys 16 port switches connected through an uplink cable. They
are separated physically by at least a hundred feet. This setup has been
working fine for over a year. Lately though, the uplink goes down on a
weekly basis. When I am at switch A and I ping a machine on switch B not all
the packets are returned. I assumed that the uplink port on the switch had
burned out so I replaced the older of the two. That seemed to fix it. Two
weeks or so later the problem is back. I'm waiting for the technician to
come and check the cables and outlets. Anybody have suggestions as to what
else could cause such a problem?

Cable is the right thing to check. Maybe something has changed in the path
of the cable? Maybe electrical wires or florescent lighing too close to the
cable causing interference.
