what is virtual memory for? Also what should my virtual memory be set to on a standard PC?

this is a vage question, but i hope it can be answered. :)

Virtual Memory is a section of your hard drive that is used to swap data in and out of ram (thus the other name "swap file"). How big your swap file needs to be depends on how much ram you have installed. Please reply with how much ram you have.
