- Socket 478 for Intel Pentium 4/ Celeron up to 3.06 GHz+
- Intel Hyper-Threading Technology ready
- New power design supports Intel next generation Prescott CPU!

Pretty much mean you can drop any P4 in there, just No PentiumD dual core.

I would suggest a Pentiun 4C like the 2.6c/2.8C/3.0c/3.2C if you can still find them resonably priced. BTW these are Northwood parts

the Cpu you linked would definitvly work, if you can find a C part and put it with DDR400 instade of 266, thats would be your best bet!

Any 400 or 533 MHz FSB Pentium 4 on socket 478 would work, according to ASUS.

A 2.80E 533 FSB Prescott in Socket 478 would be good, as would a Northwood 2.80B 533 FSB. If you can find one, a 3.06 Northwood B would be better than either but it's hard to find and EXPENSIVE. Alternatively, you can get a Celeron D 350, which is 3.20 GHz and the fastest CPU Intel released on a Socket 478 533 MHz bus. However it has 256K L2 cache. There is also a 340 that is 2.93 GHz and on 478. The Celerons are based on the 90nm Prescott core.

If it were up to me, I'd pick the Celeron 350 as it's $49.99 at TigerDirect and the fastest clock speed. 400 MHz over the 2.8 Prescott should more than make up for the 768K of cache it is missing unless you game a lot. Also, the 2.8/533 Prescott is $114. That would seal the deal for me.

So outta these with a price // performance wise which is the best?

~ Intel Pentium 4 2.8B Northwood 533MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 478 Processor 85$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116215&ATT=19-116-215&CMP=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r

~ Intel Pentium 4 2.8A Prescott 533MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache Socket 478 Processor 119$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116180

Intel Celeron D 340 Prescott 533MHz FSB Socket 478 Processor Model BX80546RE2933C - Retail 57$

Couldn't find any Pentium 4 3.0 or 3.0ghz cpu's under a 533mhz fsb.

@ MU_Engineer

And about ur suggestion about the Celeron 350, will that one work with my mobo I just noticed it said 3.06Ghz+*. Only bad thing about it being 50$ at tigerdirect is that is after 30$ rebates and im not a rebate fan.

So what is the best from money and performance outta these cpu's or something else, I cant seem to find any 3.0+ghz P4s.

*** And I have a question, right now I have a 2.0ghz celeron, would this upgrade to a 2.93ghz Celeron or a 2.8ghz P4 be werth 60-90, will I notice the difference and will it really be faster.... Thanks

Any links comments and suggestion's, Appreciated.~

Out of those, the Prescott 2.8A should be the fastest overall by a little as it has 1MB L2 cache. The Celeron is 3.06 GHz IIRC but has 256K L2 so it would pull ahead in things like encoding but would likely not do as well in games. The Celeron is the cheapest, less than half of what the Prescott costs. That is one thing to consider.

I would not see why the board would not support the 3.2 GHz Celeron D 350, unless perhaps it does not support a multiplier higher than the 23 required to get 3.06 GHz. The Celeron D 350 needs 24x to get to 3.2 GHz. I'd shoot ASUS an e-mail if I were you, just to see.

You will see a difference between the 2.0 Celeron and any of these chips we're talking about. You should expect to see ~50% increase. Not bad for $60-90, if I might say so myself.

Whats the difference in OEM and Retail when it comes to processors anything? Besides who's selling it..

And how much would be shipping from eWiz.com, considering u need to login Dont feel like signing up at moment inless its gonna be the winner at the end.

Also is there any difference between the P4 2.8ghz i had listed from newegg and that one, like will they perform the same. Thats a nice price if they perform the same, and the shipping isnt much compared to 119$ or 85$

Retail= includes 3 year warranty, heatsink, fan, thermal compound. Your typical "processor in a box" setup.

OEM= bare CPU. Generally 90-day to 1-year warranty. Must get your own heatsink, fan, and thermal compound.

AMD has stopped letting OEM versions of its processors get sold to better improve their QC. So basically only Intel does OEM anymore.

So it comes down to from my eyes, either the 2.93ghz Celeron or the P4 2.8Ghz Northwood.

My questions are right now with my 2.0Ghz Celeron is running 39ºC 102ºF, which of these 2 is better in price / performance / not having to buy a new heatsink cpu fan combo / and warranty. Edited: Or the one from eWiz that was suggested, and if anyone know's the shipping price that it would be id also like to know that.

Thanks Storm~

The Northwood is 130nm and has twice the L2 cache of the Prescott-based 2.93 Celeron. The Northwood would be a tad faster but is more expensive. You will need to figure out how much you want to spend. As to operating temps, I'd guess that they are roughly equal. A 2.0 Celeron cooler should keep either of these at an acceptable temperature too as it's likely the same Intel stock HSF unit that would ship with either of the other chips.

What about the P4 at eWiz its only 69$ basically the in between the 2 price wise, is it basically same thing performance wise also from the other one I had up from newegg. How much would the shipping be.

I'm not doing any hardcore gaming only gave I have installed is NFS Most Wanted, I haven't ever tried BF2 yet but I will in time probably.

So if you would MU_Engineer give a look at the eWiz P4 and gimme your opinion, i mean 57$ 69$ and 85$ really isnt all that much more if its gonna be werth it.

So the Newegg P4, Newegg Celeron or the eWiz P4. I mainly just want something better for smoothness and Video Editing. Thanks Storm~

The Newegg and eWiz P4s differ only in that the Newegg one has a heatsink and fan and the eWiz one does not. The eWiz P4 plus a HSF assembly will cost more than the Newegg one. If the old heatsink and fan is an Intel heatsink and fan unit and if you are comfortable in getting the HSF off of the old Celeron and putting new thermal compound on, then I'd go with the eWiz P4 as you would be buying another heatsink and fan with the Newegg P4. If you do not trust yourself to pull off the old HSF, clean it, and apply thermal compound to the new CPU, then go with the Newegg CPU as the HSF is all clean and the thermal compound is already applied- just place the heatsink over the processor.

I was talking about this P4
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116215&ATT=19-116-215&CMP=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r

They both dont come with heatsink and thermal paste. So now what?

This one I think is the one you where talking about
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116215&ATT=19-116-215&CMP=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r

And that one is 60$ more then the Celeron, and only difference is 1mb cache compared to the other 2 P4's.

So now what do you suggest, I dont think i wanna spend 120$.
Either the Celeron or the eWiz p4 or the 85$ newegg P4. Which do you suggest, only bad part is I wont have any thermal compound to use, so ill have to do some looking on how much that costs.

Thanks Storm~

Okay. Both of the P4s are identical, so I'd get the one that costs less- the $69 eWiz one. As far as thermal compound goes, you can get some for roughly $5-10. Apparently their site went dead while I was looking for thermal paste there, so you'll have to look later.

Yup, 3.5g Arctic Silver 5 is what you'd need. Just put a tiny grain-of-rice-sized bit on the bottom of the heatsink and that should do you.

As far as shipping- you should be able to ring up the order without actually submitting the charges to see the cost of shipping.
