Should THG have a "Who's online" feature?
I realize that this has been voted on before, but the "Sing in/out thread in "Other" seem to request a poll like this.
flamethrower205: Eh, no, not into graphics. Haven't you seen me go on and on about number crunching? I'm in computational condensed matter physics.
camieabz: Nono, I think the thread is fine, but even on an ADSL it takes time to always go back and check your thread, so I was hoping that THG would make some sort of online-listing like the chat-rooms have: you know, a long list in the corner of the screen, always visible. That might be a little tacky, though. I don't know.
pike: the nickname is from my dad: when I was 8 and we got our first IBM AT (? the one without harddrive: everything was running off two 5 1/4 floppies), he couldn't get me off the computer and called me the "digital child". Kind of kept it since.
well, don't know if you're in string theory, but i'm certainly not. ST is kinda like the ferrarri of physics: everybody's curious about it, you know it kicks ass, but nobody gets it (one). or almost.
Yep, I got it and LOVE it. Cool part w/ cartoons is that they don't need to be as detailed, nor as realistic looking, so I had only 2 weeks to do an english project reenacting a Romeo and Juliet scene. Illustrate saved me- I even got an A+ on it, and it counted big time. Yo, have u checked out Next Limit's fluid simulators? They are awesome! BTW, to teh guys about physics- if u ever start a thread about quantum computing and want to get into the mad technical stuff, I'm in!
Condensed matter huh? Got a degree? Lets talk jobs Everyone in physics seems to think optics and solid state are the way to go, but I took the path least taken...astrophysics. Have a midterm tommorrow. I'm typing up all notes in 8pt on a double sided peice of paper. I'm the only one in the class so I'm on my own.
Really sucks seeing as it's 2:30 am right now. Test is in 12 hours.
astrophysics! that's cool... where are you going with it? want to work with astronomy after your degree? i hope you succeed; it might be hard w.r.t. funding, etc.
i'm doing solid state, but simulations / computation. get a big kick out of comp.sci/applied math issues like algorithms, etc., but ultimately quite taken with stochastic systems, chaos, fractals and all that. i find finance to be interesting, as nobody understands it, and it's sooo deeply rooted in human psychology.
go to sleep; can't write a good test when you're tired.
ps. remember there's a difference between being "tired" and being "sleepy". ds.
I'm not really sure what I want to do with my degree. I can always get another degree, which I'll need to do if I want to work within Astrophysics (astrophysics and astronomy are the same thing), but I really want to start making some money. There are a number of jobs doing research and work with airport security (physics) that pay pretty damn good straight out of college. Programming is another option, but I'll leave that to those that actually enjoy it. The CIA is another option. Working on my own business is another option. A MBA is another option for management in industry.
sign in/out isnt really the one, at times ppl just leave without signing off, but who's on feature is better, it would get you a list of accounts which had some activity within last 10 minues or so.
