I have active directory with integrated DNS setup on a
windows 2000 server. Everything was running smoothly
unter we lost access to the internet. If I go to the cmd
prompt and type in ipconfig /registerdns we get intenet
access back for maybe an hour or a day. I have followed
all the suggestions on the knowlege base regarding
troubleshooting active directory and DNS problems but to
no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm, ipconfig /registerdns gets internet back?
Sounds to me like reseting TCP/IP does it so may I ask what DNS address you
are using in TCP/IP properties?

It should not be your ISP's DNS, in an Active Directory environment you must
use only your local DNS server. If your local DNS server cannot resolve
internet names use the DNS managment console to opem Forward Lookup Zones,
if you see a " . " Forward Lookup zone delete it! This will enable Root Hint
servers and allow you to configure a Forwarder to your ISP (DNS server
properties forwarder tab) after you have refreshed the DNS console.

Do _not_ use your ISP's DNS, in any position, on _any_ member of an AD
domain in TCP/IP properties.

How are you accessing the internet? ISA Server? ICS? RRAS?
Give some of the basics, this is too broad.

An ipconfig /all from the DC and one of the clients will help diagnose this.

We are conected directly to an ISP with a direct ethernet
link, but through a firewall first. I am not getting
any DNS errors in the event log, that is what makes this
so confusing. I have my server configured per microsofts
KB article "Trouble shooting DNS and Active Directory
Problems". Everything has been working fine until just a
couple of days ago, and to my knowledge nothing has
changed in the configureation. The rest of the computers
on the subnet that are not part of this domain, just a
workgroup are working fine. There is another server and
domain on the subnet that is not having any problems.

Did you check your DNS server for the Root zone?
Is "Disable recursion" checked on the Advanced tab?
Is the correct gateway configured on the NIC.

Please post your ipconfig /all for this server.
