Is the best way just to:
-clean both cpu & heatsync with isopropyl alch and then
-apply a small pea sized dap of AS5 on the middle of the cpu heat soreader, then
-place the heatsink on top and twist a little and then
-set it

That is the way that Arctic themselves recommend.

I typically make to orthogonal S patters on the CPU then smooth it with an old credit card to a uniform thickness...

If that's the way you prefer, I guess that's fine.

But logic says, by applying pressure (putting the heatsink on) , the compound particles will be pushed in all directions evenly ... much like liquid H2O will spread evenly when pressure is applied to them uniformly (ie HSF straight down). So I think that would be unnecessary.

Plus , the fact that you don't get any of the compound on the credit card by not using it. This can only be a good thing ... as AS5 is rather expensive. VERY, to some people. :)
