I have been told -

1 that there are only 3 companies which manufacture printers; Canon,
Epson and HP.
2 All other brands are rebadged versions.

Is this true ?

This is not true, there engines are common used but not the only ones.
Minolta, Xerox, Hitachi, Ricoh, Lexmark and a few others also build engines
commonly used.

No it is not true.

There are many other manufacturers of printers. In the inkjet lines the
three you mention are the main providers of consumer printers, the forth
being Lexmark. In the professional lines of printers, there are dozens
of companies involved, although some may use things like heads or
cartridges from a major printer company.

HP may be using some Canon engines in their laser printers, for
instance, at least they certainly used to.

Some other printer companies include: Kodak, Xerox, Okidata, Fuji,
Konica-Minolta, Roland, Encad, Mutoh, Colorspan, PrismJet, Apache, Iris,
Brady, Sharp... (some of these may now be out of business...)

Did you google "printer manufacturers" first?

It's true, and simultaneusly not.

Only HP, Canon, Epson and Lexmark have the ability to manufacture printheads
for consummer (not high priced) INKJET printers. Most of the others either
design their own print engines using printheads and other parts from the
above four companies or (rarelly) they use the original print engines.
For the LASER printers there are much more manufacturers of print engines.

So, who makes Xerox and Brother inkjets then? AIUI, they also manufacture
their own.

When looking at the printer industry... it's best to do so while
hanging from a tree upside down hold your breath until you pass out.
This won't help you understand, but at least among lasers there are so
many cross overs it makes your head spin. Usually the "print engine"
is listed somewhere so you at least have a choice where to get your
supplies

Among inkjets though... most things rebadged are lexmarks. I know this
is common with Dells, and was common with compaq printers until such
time as HP bought them out.

I'm not sure. I'm only sure they both use Canon printheads. Xerox also uses
few Lexmark printheads/cartridges (at least in the past).
