Ok so I am stumped on weather to buy a eVGA 7600GT KO or a 7900GT...I want really good performance because my current game is oblivion...(and I am playing FEAR, Quake 4, AoE3, civ4) but I do not want to spend almost 300 on a card and in 6 months or so have to spend 300 more on a dx10 card to play the newest games and have this 7900 sitting around with nothing to do with it. so when the dx10 games come out will you still be able to play them with a dx9 card? no right? what would you guys suggest?

Here we go again:

Yes, DirectX9 cards (7600GT and the 7900GT in this case) are compatible with DirectX10 games. Of course, there are some technologies and settings that can only be enabled when using a DX10 card but that doesn't stop a X1900XTX from playing DX10 in a smooth way.

There's no telling when DX10 cards will be available, some people say later this year, others say sometime next year. DX10 (the software) will ONLY be available for Windows Vista users. So say, you want to play Crysis? get ready to buy Windows Vista. A 7900GT could probably handle Crysis at low - mid settings at 1024x768 probably, something like that.

Anyways, I'd say go again and buy that 7900GT, it'll be a while until DX10 cards come out, and they will come in 120nm flavor 8O I'm waiting until they make them in 90nm and the prices go down a bit.

the 76gt is good for the price but if you can afford the 79gt
go for it.

as far as dx10 yes mostly

i mean vista and dx10 will be compatible with xp and dx9
somewhat

m$ flight sim x will be out in october or november
and will have full support for dx9 but designed for vista and
dx10 gamespot has a review on it or microsoft also has info

anyway xp and dx9 will be going a year from now
they wont dissapear anytime soon

So they say. In which case, the X1900XT would be emulating DirectX10, which means, Crysis will actually look BETTER on high end DirectX10 cards 8)

Close, but a little off. Its more acurate to say that DX10 games will be compatible with the 7600GT/7900GT. They might have a DX10 render path, but due to a lack of user base, they will include a DX9 path also. Games that REQUIRE DX10 to play will be YEARS out.

but that doesn't stop a X1900XTX from playing DX10 in a smooth way.

Again, if the x1900xtx is playing a "dx10" game, it will be doing so using DX9 code. No DX10 effects will be there.

, you want to play Crysis? get ready to buy Windows Vista

Broken record here. Buy vista if you want to play Crysis with DX10 features. Or wait awhile and use the DX9 path.

it'll be a while until DX10 cards come out, and they will come in 120nm flavor

This is a new one for me. I thought Nvidia/ATI were already down to 90nm. Why would they make the newest chips on an older tech?

With today’s GeForce 7900 GTX/7900 GT launch, NVIDIA’s moving from TSMC’s larger 110-nm process to 90-nm.
That was the big change between the 7800 and 7900. No real changes inside, but process shrink to 90nm resulting in increased clock speeds.

You dont have to buy a dx10 card as soon as vista comes out in january. All the games that are gonna come out in January where developed and tested on dx9. The developers started work on these games a while back. An 1800 XT or a 7800 GT or higher will do fine (mid to low settings). Plus dx9 cards willl have 10% better performance on windows vista. It was like when tetris first came out for windows. A lot of ppl were still running computers in DOS. Then evenutally over the months, ppl made the trasition over to the first versions of windows.

global shaders are a main feature but talk has it that physics shaders will also be included in the dx10 card, but if the physics shader is included in the first launch I'm not clear on that yet, but global shaders will. These features will be nice to have dont you think.

I too have looked into this and its just a choice of what is important to you... I always end up buying the technology that is a generation behind because of cost, bugs and etc.... this has always worked out for me and I dont think that I have lost any great gaming experiences due to that.

Just buy a good DX9 card and run with it....unless of course you have to have those bells and whistles they day they come out.

The DX10 threads are every where these days...its funny as hell!!

I've been playing Oblivion with my eVGA 7900GT (£160) and I have no complaints at 1400x900. My plan was to get into Dx10 (and Vista, they go together) in about a year, and I wanted a damn good card for the money to last me in the meantime (the 7600GT was nearly the choice, but I decided I'd be waiting more than 6 months) that would still make a good hand-me-down card to my wife's machine or for a media centre when I make the change.

So long as I'm on the one display, SLI and Croddfire aren't even considerations for me, but those nVidia cards could be done SLI - and the 7600GT pair is a waste of time. You'd be better off with a single 7900GT. So if the whole dual card thing is important to you for the near term (3 months or so) get the 7900GT.

If you are tight on budget, you could probably get a DX9 graphics card, upgrade to a DX10 graphics card and reuse the DX9 as a physics card. It seems likely that it will be possible to use at least X1950 Pro or X1650 XT with R600 this way because these cards have the same internal Xfire architecture. R600 will be released in January/February 2007 and X1950 Pro/X1650 XT in October/November 2006.

you could also sponsor the Wine project (by giving, say, $200 each) so that they develop DX10 faster and have it run on XP, and you don't have to buy Vista Ultimate (and save $400-$200 on the whole deal).

Those extra $200 would do well being spent on a DX10 card, don't you think?

get the 7900gt, and then wait till the 2nd gen Dx 10 cards come out. By then most if not all games will be made for Dx 10, and the cards will be stable.
