Hello,

we have 2 dns servers one is configured with a zone of domain.com the other
only has www.domain.com the server with domain.com is set to forward to the
server with www.domain.com. Somehow the requests for www.domain.com are not
forwarded is this by design or just how dns does its thing.

Thanks

This is how DNS does things, www.domain.com would fall under the Authority
of the server holding domain.com and will not forward any names under
domain.com. To get a server holding domain.com to resolve www.domain.com you
must either add the www record to domain.com or delegate www in the
domain.com zone to the DNS server that holds www.domain.com.

To use a delegation, in the domain.com zone create a new delegation named
www and point the delegation to the DNS server that holds www.domain.com.

s1 is auth. for domain.com. That means any label under it that has not been
delegated to another NS. One thing you can do is enter IP of www.domain.com
manually into s1 or delegate www.domain.com. to s2 on s1. Hope that makes
sense. Cheers!
