Okay...I'm trying to decide between these three cards for my build. Like just about everybody else, I need a stop-gap solution until DX10 comes out 6 to 12+ months from now. I have a 21" Samsung widescreen that I'd really like to use at native resolution (1680 X 1050) for games--GTR and GTR2, Flight Simulator 2004 (Flight Simulator X this winter), Tomb Raider Legend, COD2, maybe Oblivion one day--and the setup will include an AM2 X2 3800+ with probably a gig of DDR2-800. Here's the deal though:
I have a 350W Cooler Master PSU that came with my case...I know that the 7600GT doesn't need an external PCI-E power connection, and I've heard it doesn't consume much more power than my current 9600XT (i.e. I can use my current PSU for now and save $$). I have a feeling that the other two will need the external power connection, and will likely need a beefier PSU (maybe 450W) to feed them...right?
This choice normally wouldn't have been a problem, but with the price cuts, the X1800XT is a little over 200 USD, and the X1900GT, 230 USD (Newegg)...both within $70 of a 7600GT, with greater performance. Yet that benefit might be erased if I have to buy an $80-100 PSU to feed the beasts.
So in light of my resolution and power requirements, as well as the advent of newer games and DX10 coming up in the next 6-12+ months, what would be the better choice? What about Crossfire/SLI? Is that a dead end, with multi-GPU boards from ATI and Nvidia here, and more coming? I was planning on getting the $142 Asus M2N-SLI, and run a single card for now (I'm aware you can't use Crossfire on an Nvidia chipset)...
I'd go with the 7600GT. I purchased mine, it's a eVGA KO version which means it's overclocked, AND I got a $25 rebate on it, only cost me $120. I think because DX10 is coming soon you should go with the least expensive video card. I have a X2 3800 and a 7600 GT and I can run Doom 3, Half-Life 2, COD2, Fear, all with max, or close to max detail. I 50+ fps on all the named games.
I would go for the 7600GT for sure then. Whats GTR tho? I couldn't run all my components completely stable with my 400W p/s. (2hdd, 2 optical, sound card, xp3000+, 9800pro). It also depends on how many devices you are running. I believe the 1900gt uses less power than the 1800xt, but the performance in some games will be lower, and you're paying more for it. How many things are going to be plugged into that 350w p/s? I personally wouldn't risk it, and would just stay with the 7600GT.
Thanks guys...Ragnarok, where'd you get that 7600 from? What resolutions are you guys playing at?
Tiger131, GTR is the best racing simulation out there right now (helps me get my fix during the winter)...at least until GTR 2 comes out in September (with DX9 engine). It's based on the FIA GT series (sports car racing)...Porsches, Ferraris, Lambos, Saleens, Moslers, BMWs, etc...you can check it out here:
I dont have a 7600GT actually. Im poor, too many bills to pay and am finally catching up (along with spending money fixing my car - thank god I can do most of that myself). I just got athlon 64 3500+ and am going to buy the x1800xt within the next couple of weeks. Funny thing is I wanted to get GTR when I first heard about it, but then I forgot about it. I love good racing games, but its hard to find ones I truly enjoy. That and I dont have a steering wheel for the computer, nor a joypad even. Ive been strapped for cash for the last yr and a half.
