I recently traded my Nvidia FX 5500 128MB for an ATI Radeon 9550 256MB graphics card. I only play one game, F1 Challenge 99-02. Runs pretty well on the 9550. What happens though is when I'm in middle of the game the screen just blacks out. Sometimes the screen hangs too yet you could still see a picture. The game freezes and there's this hissing and crackling sound I could hear from my speakers. This only happened when I replaced my GPU. So is it the graphics card? Hit me about several times already. I think I have enough RAM. I have 2x512MB DDR 533 RAM. My CPU is a Celeron 336.
I was planning on overclocking the 9550 but decided not to when I started encountering problems. Actually the 9550 scores better in 3dMark than the FX 5500. But hey, if the card's faulty, I'm getting back my 5500.
I'm planning on getting a core 2 duo processor and a capable mobo sometime in the future. The Celeron really sucks. I feel it too.
Nah Cleeve, my old card has never crashed. The fan even stopped spinning for a a couple of weeks and I didn't even notice. Still kept on going. Performance never went down, maybe a bit though, but it wasn't noticeable even on benchmarks.
What's a good midrange card? I see lots of FX 6600s. There's ultra, SE, 128MB, 256MB, etc. Sometimes the 256s are even cheaper than the 128s. How do I choose which is best?
By the way, could it be that the heatsink on the 9550 might have been unseated or something? It moves around quite a bit.
